Brookgreen Gardens Shares January Happenings

Brookgreen Gardens recently released their schedule of events and exhibitions rolling out this month. You can see the list below (with descriptions provided by the venue).

Programming

January 16th – Reign of Rice Lecture Series

Administrators and students of the CCU Athenaeum Press and Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies programs will discuss the research projects conducted throughout the Lowcountry for this upcoming lecture series. This will be a live virtual event via Zoom and the presenters will be available to answer questions after the presentation. To receive an invitation link for the Zoom meeting, call 843-235-6049.

January 25th – Alligators of the Lowcountry

Alligators are a part of living in the Lowcountry and one of Brookgreen’s zookeepers, Kayleigh, will be sharing fun facts about these animals on January 25 at the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium. She will debunk myths, talk about brumation (alligator hibernation) and discuss the importance of them being a keystone species. This is a virtual event via Zoom. Exhibitions

Now through February 14th – Rosie Sandifer: A Life in Painting and Sculpture

A collection of oil paintings and bronze sculptures will showcase the career to date of Rosie Sandifer, an award-winning Fellow of the National Sculpture Society, Portrait Society of America, American Artists Professional League and Plein Air Painters of America. From maquettes of monuments to sculptures of all sizes depicting the joys of childhood, the three-dimensional aspect of the exhibit will amaze and awe. The paintings range from landscapes – mostly plein-air, but also studio works – portraits, vignettes of people and children in everyday activities, as well as Western-themed subjects.

January 9th through March 31st – Black Southern Belles

Internationally acclaimed Gullah artist, speaker and Pan African Cultural Heritage Institute Fellow, Sonja Griffin Evans, will display her works in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium beginning January 9. Growing up in the Lowcountry heavily influenced Evans’s work and gave her an uncanny ability to capture the beauty, spirit and purest representations of the Gullah Sea Island and African American Culture. As a prolific mixed medium artist, she incorporates items such as tin, wood and other materials in her art while using vibrant colors on canvas which are indicative of traditional Gullah style.

January 9th through March 31st – Grass in Motion

Antwon Ford began weaving sweetgrass baskets at his grandmothers’ side when he was only four years old. In 2009 he began his Grass in Motion series experimenting with mathematically inspired shapes and the juxtaposition of light and dark; full and empty spaces; and more.  Most recently exhibited at the Gibbes Museum of Art, Grass in Motion will be featured in Learning Lab One of Brookgreen’s Wall Lowcountry Center beginning January 9.
