There are many people around the world who love any kind of sports. There are also many people around the world who enjoy gambling and betting when their favorite sports teams are playing. Unfortunately there are several locations around the world where online sports betting is not legal and in the USA, the state of South Carolina is one of those places. In the USA, online sports betting requires legislation at the state level and this is why it might be legal in some states while other states won’t legalize sports betting. Historically, South Carolina has been very opposed to almost all forms of gambling which also includes online sports betting. This is very unfortunate for the many sports fans in the state because the opposition towards online sports betting seems to still be going strong. Even though there have been several attempts in 2019 and 2020 to legalize sports betting, it is still as illegal as it has ever been. But the fight to legalize online sports betting in South Carolina is not yet over. If you want to know more about the state of South Carolina’s sports betting legislation, you should keep reading this article where we give you much more information.

The history of online sports betting in South Carolina

Ever since South Carolina became a state back in 1788, there has been a law that says that any kind of lottery or gambling involving dice, lots, cards, balls or tickets is forbidden both in public and in private. The reason for this law is probably due to South Carolina’s overwhelmingly conservative values and Christian-centric beliefs. Because the law goes all the way back to the 18th century, it is probably one of the main reasons why it is so difficult to change the law and if it is ever going to be changed, it will definitely take some time. The state takes the law pretty seriously and if you violate the law, you will risk going to jail. If sports fans want to bet on sports online, they will have to go to another state where online sports betting is legal.

The current sports betting situation

The current sports betting situation in South Carolina is not really different from what it is usually like. The state doesn’t allow any form of betting or gambling and they are considered as one of the most anti-gambling states in the USA. Some of the other states in the southern USA offer a few betting options but South Carolina is very strict when it comes to gambling and betting. They had a chance to loosen up the law in May of 2018 when the US Supreme Court repealed a federal ban on sports betting. The ban outlawed sports gambling in almost all states of the USA. The Supreme Court voted the ban down which allowed the states in the USA to create their own laws and regulations around betting. A lot of the states in the USA took advantage of this but South Carolina chose to keep their strict law that bans any kind of betting.

The future of online sports betting in South Carolina

It is questionable how the future of online sports betting will be in South Carolina. Right now it doesn’t look like the state is going to change the strict law regarding betting anytime soon. Even though there are some people in the senate, who are pro gambling, the majority still prefer to keep the law against sports betting. If South Carolina will ever make sports betting legal, it will probably be a matter of finances. Some of the other states in the USA may experience some financial success with sports betting and that could make the state of South Carolina change the law. But right now it doesn’t seem like it is going to happen in the near future. When betting, stick to the standard sports and skip the games like poker, slots, etc.
