Brookgreen Gardens Announces March Happenings

Brookgreen Gardens today released their schedule of March happenings. See below for the full list of events and more.

News:

Beginning March 1st, Brookgreen’s Gardener’s Cottage will reopen. The ticket and information center, located near the Highway 17 entrance to the gardens, is accessible to the public to provide easier access for general information and ticket and membership purchases.

Closed since March 2020 due to COVID-19, the Gardener’s Cottage will be using safety measures to deter the spread of the virus.

Programming:

• Gullah Geechee Program Series – The Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture, March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
  • Continuing every Wednesday through Spring, Ron Daise will be presenting The Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture in this virtual webinar. He will discuss Gullah Geechee culture and heritage and how music is intertwined in the culture and language during these interactive presentations.

• Dr. Seuss Day!, March 6
  • On March 6, Brookgreen celebrates Dr. Suess with a full-filled event in the Enchanted Storybook Forest. The event will include exciting Suess-themed games, make-and-take-crafts and S.T.E.M. challenges. Individual craft kits will be distributed and COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place to ensure all guests can visit the gardens safely.

• Reign of Rice Lecture Series, 2021 Perpetuating Rice Heritage Through the Arts, March 13
  • Victoria Smalls, a visual artist, cultural preservationist and public historian of St. Helena Island, SC will speak on Gullah Geechee art and its West African influences and similarities in this virtual webinar.

• Sandy Island with Susan McMillian, March 15
  • Susan McMillian, historian and archeologist with a passion for coastal South Carolina history has led archeological digs on former Georgetown County rice plantations, including Brookgreen. She will host this virtual webinar that takes participants on a photographic and historic exploration of Sandy Island, SC, the largest underdeveloped freshwater island along the East Coast.

• Open Studio, March 24
  • Bryan Rapp, Brookgreen’s Director of the Master Sculptor Program will host this live monthly event in the Campbell Sculpture Center Studio. He will demonstrate the sculpture-making process and allow time for a Q&A.

• Conifers of the Southeast with Bradley Roberts, March 24
  • Bradley Roberts, former president of the southeast region of the American Conifer Society, will host this in-person lecture to discuss the best conifer selections for the southeastern U.S. He will give tips on displaying conifers at home as well as how to select the best specimens for performance during hot and humid summers.

Ongoing Special Exhibitions:

• Wild World: 200 Years of Nature in Art, February 27 – May 23
  • Wild World: 200 Years of Nature in Art is the inaugural exhibition in the new Rosen Galleries. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, etchings, lithographs and drawings by great 19th, 20th and 21st-century artists in the fields of botanical and zoological illustration. Sporting art and other fine art depicting the purposes of Brookgreen Gardens—sculpture, plants, animals and history—are also included in this exhibition
• Black Southern Belles, through March 31
  • South Carolina native and internationally acclaimed Gullah artist, speaker and Pan African Cultural Heritage Institute Fellow, Sonja Griffin Evans, will display her works in Brookgreen’s Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium beginning January 9. Her work encapsulates the lifestyle of African Americans after the civil war and illuminates the beauty of Gullah culture. Each of her pieces tell an alluring story and create a reflection of the deep spirituality of people of African descent.

• Grass in Motion, through March 31
  • Antwon Ford began weaving sweetgrass baskets at his grandmothers’ side when he was only four years old. In 2009 he began his Grass in Motion series experimenting with mathematically inspired shapes and the juxtaposition of light and dark; full and empty spaces; and more.  Most recently exhibited at the Gibbes Museum of Art, Grass in Motion will be featured in Learning Lab One of Brookgreen’s Wall Lowcountry Center beginning January 9.
