4 Mood Uplifting Essential Oils That Might Be Worth a Shot

Published

on

Essential oils have become so popular over the last few years, and for some people they have become just how they sound: essential! These oils can provide some benefits for people experiencing physical and psychological problems in their everyday life, like headaches, insomnia and depression, just to name a few.

Now, there are many people and experts who question the usefulness of essential oils altogether, and they have all the right to do so! You see, there are many bogus health claims about EOs that have no scientific evidence and are mostly promoted by multi-level marketing companies and individuals that sell these products online, explains Morris Health.

Looking beyond the hype, however, there are some essential oils that can actually offer modest benefits, and one of the most common uses of these aromatic oils is to improve overall mood and promote a more positive mindset. The following are four essential oils that may help take the edge off dark and stressful days.

1. Orange Oil

Not only does orange oil offer the fresh, uplifting scent of an orange, but it has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress levels, and alleviate some symptoms of anxiety and depression! A 2019 study concluded that orange essential oil inhalation resulted in fewer behaviors associated with depression.

Despite the fact that this study was conducted on mice, anecdotal evidence suggests that the same effects can also be achieved in humans who inhale orange EO.

2. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is most commonly known for its ability to improve sleep quality, but is also potentially effective for improving mood. Due to its relaxing nature, lavender has been medicinally used to reduce blood pressure levels and symptoms of depression.

Inhaling lavender oil is the best way to harness its calming effects; you can do this by diffusing the oil in an essential oil diffuser, or by adding a few drops to a diffuser bracelet just like what Kumi Oils sells or to your pillowcase for a restful night’s sleep (but be sure to dilute it to avoid stains).

3. Bergamot Oil

Another citrus essential oil that has a positive effect on the mind is bergamot oil. It is often used in aromatherapy to lessen symptoms of anxiety and depressive mood.

Bergamot oil, when inhaled, has a modulatory effect on dopamine release and activity in the brain. Dopamine is a brain chemical and neurotransmitter that has several functions, including regulation of mood and emotions. This was shown in a Japanese study conducted on women who inhaled bergamot oil and exhibited improved mood, as well as reduction in stress.

4. Ylang Ylang Oil

This interestingly named essential oil extracted from the tropical ylang ylang (cananga) tree is also known to have various health benefits. Besides its use in perfumes, ylang ylang essential oil has several uses in aromatherapy, such as reducing blood pressure, alleviating anxiety and depression, and yes, boosting mood.

Try Them Yourself!

If you’re feeling run-down, anxious, depressed, or just in need of a quick pick-me-up, orange, lavender, bergamot and ylang ylang essential oils are worthy options to try out. To get the best results, diffuse one of these oils in an oil diffuser, or make a mix of the ones that best fit your needs. You can also find plenty of pre-made aromatic oil blends on the market that are tailored for specific uses.
