Brookgreen Gardens Shares April Program Scheduling

This April celebrates National Garden Month and Brookgreen Gardens today shared it’s schedule for the next month.

This spring, Brookgreen Gardens says they will “come alive with dozens of blooming flower varietals like azaleas, daffodils and tulips. New this year, Brookgreen’s horticulture staff has planted over three acres of wildflowers in the arboretum that will provide visual interest and attract beneficial pollinators.”

Programming Schedule:

  • Virtual Gullah Geechee Program Series – The Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture, April 7, 14, 21, 28
    • Continuing every Wednesday through Spring, Ron Daise will be presenting The Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture in this virtual webinar. He will discuss Gullah Geechee culture and heritage and how music is intertwined in the culture and language during these interactive presentations.
    • Price: Free
  • Animals in Bas-Relief with Rod Zullo, April 5 – April 9
    • Rod Zullo has traveled extensively and studied a variety of art styles, mediums and messages and is a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society. Participants in this in-person, five-day workshop will learn to mold an animal in bas-relief with clay making a mold and cast in a resin material. Coloring and patination techniques will also be taught and the class will be held in the Campbell Center Sculpture Studio.
    • Price: $650 plus materials fee
  • Open Studio, April 21
    • Bryan Rapp, Brookgreen’s Director of the Master Sculptor Program will host this live monthly event in the Campbell Sculpture Center Studio. He will demonstrate the sculpture-making process and allow time for a Q&A.
    • Price: Free with Garden Admission
  • Tai Chi for Beginners, April 21
    • Marsha Green, a local Tai Chi instructor, will lead this in-person class through the basic, fundamental moves of Tai Chi. The event will be held in Brookgreen’s Leonard Pavilion.
    • Price: Included with garden admission
  • Scout Days 2021, April 24
    • On April 24, Girl Scout troops or individuals can enjoy a guided tour of the Lowcountry Zoo and meet one of Brookgreen’s animal ambassadors and explore S.T.E.M challenges and crafts.
    • Price: $7 per child, $7 per additional adult
  • Earth Day Celebration, April 24
    • Brookgreen will celebrate Earth Day with this in-person session at the Lowcountry Zoo and Enchanted Storybook Forest. The event is a fun-filled day with educational stations for all ages. Adults can learn about native plants and conservations while children explore S.T.E.M. stations to complete their Earth Day passport. Guest will meet some of Brookgreen’s ambassadors, learn through horticulture demonstrations and enjoy live music.
    • Price: Included with garden admission
  • Developing the Sculptor’s Eye with Simon Kogan, April 26 – April 30
    • Instructor Simon Kogan was born in Russia and received 13 years of classical training including a Master in Fine Arts and an apprenticeship under renowned sculptor Isaac Brodsky. In this in-person, five-day workshop, participants will create a sculpture and learn how motion and character are tied to anatomy and structure. Working with a model and chosen material (oil, clay, water), participants will transform a lump of clay into a masterpiece. The workshop will be held in Brookgreen’s Campbell Center Sculpture Studio.
    • Price: $650 plus materials and model’s fee

Ongoing Special Exhibitions

  • Wild World: 200 Years of Nature in Art, until May 23
    • Wild World: 200 Years of Nature in Art is the inaugural exhibition in the new Rosen Galleries. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, etchings, lithographs and drawings by great 19th, 20th and 21st-century artists in the fields of botanical and zoological illustration. Sporting art and other fine art depicting the purposes of Brookgreen Gardens—sculpture, plants, animals and history—are also included in this exhibition.
