CCPL Seeking Community Input on Programs, Events and Creative Studio Equipment for Renovated Libraries

Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) wants your help in shaping the future of some of its branches! CCPL is collecting input and opinions from community members about potential programs/events and makerspace equipment for the three libraries currently under renovation (Hurd/St. Andrews, John’s Island, and Otranto Road). The information collected will be used to develop future programs and events for the branch as well as guide the purchase of maker and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) equipment and tools.

“Libraries are a place for the community, by the community,” said CCPL Executive Director Angela Craig. “This survey will provide invaluable input and let the community be a part of shaping and molding the programs they would like to experience inside their libraries.”

The Hurd/St. Andrews, John’s Island, and Otranto Road libraries are the first of the existing libraries to be renovated. Renovations are planned for all existing library branches as a part of the $108.5 million referendum that was approved in 2014 by 74% of Charleston County voters.

What is a program?
A library program focuses on providing attendees a valuable and engaging experience that meet one or more of the following goals:

• Provides opportunities for continuing education and lifelong learning

• Serve our community’s diversity through engaging entertainment, enrichment and opportunities to encounter new ideas and learn new skills
• Offers a dynamic exchange of information

What is a maker equipment?
Maker equipment are tools and supplies used to work on Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects. The tools are purchased for library locations based on the community’s interests or needs. For example, maker equipment may include crafting materials, sewing machines, or technology like 3D printers. The equipment for the different branches is unique to the community it serves.
