Lowcountry Juneteenth Week Releases Schedule of Events
Lowcountry Juneteenth of Charleston will be hosting its first ever outdoor festival during a week-long celebration called Lowcountry Juneteenth Week (LJW) from June 14th to 20th, 2021. The event will highlight black owned businesses with curated events throughout the city including live performances, exhibits, seminars and more.
LJW will also focus on economic empowerment by presenting virtual seminars that focus on health and wellness, real estate, financial freedom, legal matters, and entrepreneurship. Some highlights of the festival will include:
- Kid’s Day presented by nonprofits Acts of Kindness and Every 1 Voice Matters
- A Tribute to Anita Baker concert presented by Zandrina Dunning of the ZD Experience and the Charleston Music Hall featuring Black Diamond & Friends
- Dennis L. King’s theatrical play “Illusions” featuring Tony Grant from the Tyler Perry play “Why Did I get Married”
- A culinary experience with 5 course meal and wine pairings with Celebrity Chef Carlos Brown and Leeah’s Old Village Wine Shop
- A golf tournament by the Mu Alpha chapter of Omega Psi Phi
- A family day of fun on Saturday, June 19th at The Bend.
- The eventwill feature children’s activities, food trucks, vendors, performances, fireworks, and a live concert featuring Tony! Toni! Tone!, Raheem DeVaughn, Lacee, Lebrado, Joe Nice and more
The festival also welcomes Ms. Opal Lee, 94-year-old community activist, who has long advocated for a national celebration of Juneteenth. Ms. Opal’s efforts have garnered over a million signatures to make Juneteenth a nationally recognized federal holiday.
Lowcountry Juneteenth Week has been declared the “Official” Juneteenth Festival of the Lowcountry by the Juneteenth National Observance Foundation where Ms. Opal Lee is the oldest member.

Does this not seam like racially profiled? There is a National Black History Month in January already~do we have any special weeks in Charleston that are for Asian culture and supporting their businesses or skin tones? What about a week for Latino’s and a week that is for the Jewish population heritage? The Greek festival is just a festival and only three days; not an entire week. Is there an entire week to promote Hispanic culture? What about Germans, Polish, Russians, French or English? I believe the more Charleston and other Historical Classic Cities fall onto the thoughts of racial culture and promoting divisions that have been funded for more than 80 years through things like NAACP, United Negro Fund, All Black Beauty Pageants, etc., the more our country DIVIDES itself. This is the United States, UNITED only when we stop focusing on skin color or ethnicity and start looking at behaviors. A person equals a life, no matter the color of the skin, all lives matter. Celebrate being United and progressing as a community without red-lines.

The City did not create this event, nor did they create the Greek event. Anyone is welcome to create their own weekend, week, or one-off event.
