Gibbes Museum of Art Announces AAPI Heritage Month Virtual Town Hall

The Gibbes Museum of Art will host a virtual town hall acknowledging the accomplishments and contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities coinciding with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.

  • Amid a difficult year with the rise in hate crimes, the Gibbes strives to uplift AAPI stories with the virtual town hall-style Zoom. Local artists and community stakeholders will amplify their voices and concerns while sharing their cultural pride through questions of identity and community. The event focuses on the work of artist and adjunct professor at Miami University, Emily Hanako Momohara that centers around issues of identity, immigration, and social justice. Whether camping on Angel Island in San Francisco, the former immigration gateway from the East, in a quest to better understand her great-grandfather’s experience, or photographing former sites of incarceration of Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants during World War II, Momohara’s work probes family narrative and the transmission of cultural traditions allowing guests to critically reflect on the diverse experience of immigrants to America.
