Lowcountry Orphan Relief and East Cooper Home Store Announce Summer Partnership
Each year, Lowcountry Orphan Relief (LOR) serves between 4,000-5,000 children in the Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties that are at risk or suffering from abuse, neglect, and abandonment. From newborns to young adults, LOR staff and its dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to provide Care Kits, Just In Case Closets, children’s events, and other services to support the needs of referred children.
This June and July, East Cooper Home Store will raise funds for LOR by donating a portion of the proceeds made from the sale of gently-used furniture and other home items. By donating your previously loved sofa, a working appliance that’s just being upgraded or by purchasing a new chair or a furniture piece you plan to refurbish- you are helping to support children served through Lowcountry Orphan Relief.
Founded in 2006, Lowcountry Orphan Relief is a non-profit organization that provides goods and services to children who have been abused or neglected. Working directly with other organizations, schools, agencies, and foster programs, LOR identifies children in severe situations and provides individual support to each child. Monetary donations, as well as donations of new and “like new” goods are essential for LOR’s mission to provide a strong and positive impact through:
- Care Kits – each child receives a care kit from LOR within 48 hours of the referral. Each kit is compiled to meet the individual child’s needs with 2 weeks worth of essential supplies.
- “Just in Case Closets” – LOR is partnered with 30+ Title 1 schools in the Tri-County area to provide emergency clothing for children while at school. Each “Just in Case Closet” costs approximately $800 to open and requires continued funds and donations to maintain.
- Annual Children’s Events – each year, LOR puts on 2 signature events for children in foster care – “Beach Day” in August complete with surf lessons, beach activities, lunch and treats, as well as “Make a Child Happy Day” in November filled with games, bouncy houses, pony rides, balloon artists, face painting, a DJ, and more. Each event draws nearly 150 kids.
“We are so grateful for the support of local partners like East Cooper Home Store, who are just as passionate about seeing our missions succeed for the greater good of our communities,” explains Christina Lope, Program Director of Lowcountry Orphan Relief. “Efforts made by community members and organizations, like East Cooper Home Store, help us continue to reach and serve the most vulnerable and deserving children in the Lowcountry.”
East Cooper Home Store is open Monday – Saturday from 9AM – 6PM for in-store donations and retail shopping. Pre-arranged pick-up of donated items is also available. For more information, please visit eastcooperhomestore.com.
