Gardening Education Fills the Month of August for CHS HORT

Celebrating its sixth year of providing first class, enjoyable and informative horticulture educational workshops to all levels of Lowcountry  gardeners, CHS Hort’s popular Summer Workshop Series returns to in-person (and some  virtual) learning, honoring the joy of gardening with more than 20 workshops over the course of  three weeks throughout the month of August!  

Open to all from newcomers to experienced gardeners, the workshops are created with the  needs of the Lowcountry gardener in mind. With classes ranging from Charleston garden history, fall planting and native plants to pruning, floral design, tropicals, ferns and so much more, it’s a great way to learn and network with fellow passionate garden enthusiasts.

This season’s workshops offer a wide variety of expert instructors from all throughout the Lowcountry including professionals from Bartlett Tree Experts, Hyams Garden & Accent Store, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, Charleston Parks Conservancy and more.

The workshops will also take place in locations throughout the city as well. While many will be  held in the CHS Hort’s Education Center located in the South Windermere Shopping Center in West Ashley, other indoor and outdoor spaces will be used as well including Magnolia Community Garden in West Ashley, Hyams Garden Center on James Island and the Queen  Street Playhouse downtown. A sampling of some of the classes are listed below:

Intro to Lowcountry Gardening – Tuesday August 10th – A workshop designed to introduce newcomers to the Lowcountry, especially northern transplants, about the basics of gardening in a new, and more temperate climate. Taught by a master gardener and north transplant!

A History of Gardening in Charleston – Saturday August 14th – A brief history of gardening in the Lowcountry starting all the way back to 1670 at Charles Town Landing and the expansion into the peninsula and beyond, taught by native Charlestonian and garden author Louisa Pringle Cameron at the Queen Street Playhouse.

Creating a Diverse Ecosystem in an Urban Garden – Thursday August 19th – Leslie Wade  of Charleston Parks Conservancy will host an on-site workshop at Magnolia Community Garden in West Ashley to discuss small space gardening to provide food sources and habitat for all  important pollinators.

These workshops are but three examples of the diverse and wide-ranging topics that will be offered this season to all gardeners, from novice to green thumbs. Some workshops will also include opportunities to buy and win plants.

Class times and prices vary. Some classes will be offered online as well.
