Downtown Pink Lemonade Stand Raising Money for Breast Cancer Research on Saturday

On Saturday, August 14th, The Pink Lemonade Stand Challenge campaign is hosting a Charleston Pink Lemonade Stand from 10 am to 2 pm on Calhoun Street in between Coming and St. Philip Street.

The Pink Lemonade Stand Challenge’s mission is to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. They accomplish this by challenging individuals to make a pink lemonade stand. The Charleston stand will be held in honor of Meg Kinnard, a South Carolina political reporter with the Associated Press who’s breast cancer journey inspired the stand’s organizers.

For the fifth year, 12-year-old Brynne Rhodes will break out her pitcher of pink lemonade, mask-up and raise funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Her signature pink lemonade stand comes with a twist: Brynne is challenging others across the country to #BeTheEnd of breast cancer and take the Pink Lemonade Stand Challenge by hosting a stand of their own.  The campaign’s goals are to: raise funds for breast cancer research, raise awareness about BCRF, promote breast cancer education and encourage families, communities, and businesses to engage in community service together.  The pandemic has slowed breast cancer screenings, diagnoses and treatments.  Clinical trials, essential to the development of new treatments, have also decelerated due to the pandemic.  NOW MORE THAN EVER support for breast cancer research is vital to finding a way to prevent and cure breast cancer, a disease that strikes 1 in 8 women.

In 2016, New Jersey seven-year-old Brynne Rhodes found out that her mother, Kim, was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Brynne asked her mom if she could make a lemonade stand and together they decided to donate the proceeds to breast cancer research. After investigating charities, the pair decided to donate to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), the highest rated breast cancer charity in the country, according to charity watchdogs.

In 2019, Pink Lemonade stands were held in more than 25 states and thanks to an invitation from the TODAY show, Brynne was able to reach millions of viewers across the country. Then, Macy’s highlighted the campaign in October of 2019, as part of Macy’s We All Thrive Breast Cancer Awareness month campaign. Lilly Pulitzer stores nationwide sprung into action and joined the effort hosting pink lemonade stands in more than 30 stores.

Brynne’s efforts are in honor of her mother and in memory of her great-grandmother, both of her grandmothers, and her aunt who also fought the disease. To date, the Pink Lemonade Stand Challenge has raised almost $60,000 for BCRF.
