DNC Chair Jaime Harrison Announces First Red State Fund Grant During Bus Tour Stop

Press Release

On Friday during a “Build Back Better” bus tour stop in Columbia, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison announced that the South Carolina Democratic Party will receive the very first initial grant in the DNC’s newly-created “Red State Fund” and “I Will Vote initiative.” This grant will provide $100,000 to the South Carolina Democratic Party to fund voter registration efforts ahead of the 2022 midterms.

The DNC’s seven-figure “Red State Fund” is designed to put Republicans on defense and build tailored programs for traditionally Republican states. The Red State Fund includes direct investments and grants for states that meet two of the following criteria: no Democratic senator or governor, less than 25% of the congressional delegation are Democrats, and a supermajority of Republicans in their state legislature.

“While Republicans are going to egregious lengths to keep people from voting, the investment we are making today will help more people in the state of South Carolina register to vote so that they can make their voices heard,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. “Turning red states blue doesn’t happen by accident and the DNC is proud to be making critical, early investments to give Democratic state parties across the country the resources they need to be successful.”

This announcement comes as the DNC has invested significant resources to fight voter suppression efforts across the country and prepare for the 2022 midterms. In June, Vice President Kamala Harris announced the DNC will invest another $25 million to expand its “I Will Vote” initiative to address and overcome efforts across the country to make voting more difficult and burdensome.

Earlier this year, Chair Harrison announced that the DNC will make an initial $20 million investment before the general election in 2022. That funding is also in addition to a historic four-year agreement to provide $23 million to state parties as part of the DNC’s 2022 midterm strategy.
