Green Heart Project Launches 2021 Back to School Efforts
On Monday, August 16th, The Green Heart Project launched its 2021 Back to School Fundraiser. The local nonprofit focused on education, healthy food, and community is hoping to recruit 50 volunteers & raise $30,000 over the next six weeks to support their vision for the ‘21-’22 school year, which includes garden education and fresh produce for thousands of Charleston students.
This year, The Green Heart Project will sow new seeds expanding garden education into 15 schools reaching over 2,400 students. They will deepen roots with existing partners by distributing 5,000 lbs of produce to students & families and having a presence in school lunchrooms. And, strengthen our community by offering dozens of safe, in-person volunteer opportunities in their school gardens and at the new, centrally-located Urban Farm at Enston Home.
How can you help realize this vision?
- One, give your time. The Green Heart Project is excited to bring back safe, in-person volunteer opportunities this year and is actively recruiting volunteers for their “Green Heart Buddy” program. Green Heart Buddies are a crucial part of Green Heart’s education programs, acting as mentors for students during garden and cooking lessons. Apply here today.
- Two, give your treasure. Help Green Heart raise $30,000 in the next 6 weeks to fund farm & garden supplies, educational materials, field trips and Farm to School lessons. Check out their crowdfunding site here, and spread the word!
- Three, EAT A SALAD! Green Heart has teamed up with their friends over at Basic Kitchen – with support from GrowFood Carolina & Limehouse Produce – to host the 7-week-long BK Salad Project. From August 2nd through September 19th, order the seasonal #SaladProject dish, with recipes crafted by local taste-makers such as Shuai Wang of Jackrabbit Filly and Vivian Howard of Lenoir, and know that 100% of proceeds will directly support The Green Heart Project’s Back to School Fundraiser. The event will end with a Grand Finale Saladbration on September 23rd at the restaurant – tickets will be released in the next few weeks.
“We’re thrilled to be growing more local food, and reaching more local students than ever this year,” said The Green Heart Project’s Executive Director Jesse Blom. “We invite you to join our Green Heart community by donating to our Back to School fundraiser, and getting outside to volunteer with us in our gardens this Fall.”
