Holy City Vintage Market Celebrates Five Years with Fashion on the Fly, a Vintage Fashion Show Supporting We Are Family

The Holy City Vintage Market (HCVM) will celebrate its 5th anniversary on Sunday, September 5th at the Royal American from 11 am to 4 pm. The event will not only be HCVM’s biggest market ever, but also “Fashion on the Fly,” a vintage fashion show supporting We Are Family.

“All I wanted when we began was to create a place for like-minded souls to gather and share their love and appreciation for all-things vintage and secondhand,” said founder and co-organizer Kelly Rae Smith of Rhubarb Vintage. “I never imagined that we’d be here five years later, with an entire sustainable fashion movement that so many local vintage vendors are responsible for ushering into Charleston.”

At 3 pm during the September 5th market, a “flash” vintage fashion show will commence to raise money for We Are Family, a local nonprofit that provides support and leadership development for youth who have been marginalized on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Stylist teams will be assigned a group of volunteer models and – at noon on market day – a specific set of vendors to pull looks from. They’ll have two-and-a-half hours to assemble a look for each model using items from the day’s market vendors. The models walk the runway at 3 pm. The audience can vote for their favorite stylist with their dollars, donating directly to We Are Family.

Stylists include Major Vintage owner Jared Major, model-style enthusiast Sef Livingston, stylist Tyler McCormack, model-style icon JD Aller, and model-actor Remmy.

Fashion on the Fly co-organizers are Ancien Vintage, Rhubarb Vintage, and Closet Case Thrift.

While HCVM’s first market in 2016 featured six vendors, the 5-year anniversary market will feature over 30. In addition to mostly vintage and sustainable vendors, the birthday bash will also boast live vintage rock covers by Dr. Dence, tarot card readings, henna body paint, fresh flowers, children’s books, and more.

Vintage and secondhand shops who participated in both the first HCVM as well as the September 5th birthday market are Rhubarb Vintage, Threads Todisco, and Frenchie Vintage.

The Royal American will have plenty of rum punch and birthday cake available during the event.
