It is not difficult to buy food and save money. If you are willing to plan ahead, do your research, and be creative about how you shop – you can get what you need without breaking the bank. Luckily for all of us, grocery shopping is an unavoidable part of life that we must do weekly or monthly. But unlike other parts of our lives where we may just go with the flow, grocery shopping requires a little more effort and consideration to make sure we are getting what we want and sticking within budget at the same time.

Here is a guide on how to save money while still buying healthy ingredients.

Buy in bulk if possible and freeze it for later use

Buy in bulk if possible! Shopping for food and eating healthy can be tough, but frozen vegetables are a great way to save money. Freezing food is also a great way to save time later on. I freeze some of the foods that I buy in bulk and then pull them out when I need them to use in recipes. For example, you can shop bulk pickles, olives, or other vegetables and then freeze them for later use. This trick helps you to save money because you are able to buy in bulk always gets you better deals in the long run.

Buy items that are in season and on sale

Shopping for food can be tough, but if you know what’s in season and what is currently marked down/on sale, then it will certainly help you save money. For example: Apples are cheap in the fall because they are an abundant crop, whereas berries are more expensive in the winter because they are not as available. Buying fruits and vegetables that are in season can help you save money. The same goes for buying meat products, just make sure to compare your prices at different stores-some may have the product on sale while others do not!  A great way to save is to use Kohl’s promo codes.

Comparing prices

Some people may be stuck on products they usually get, but every now and then it’s good to compare prices in order to save money. The main places you should be comparing food prices are at the grocery store and farmers’ market. Farmer’s markets are one of the best stores not only because the product itself is great, but also because they’re usually cheaper than buying products at a grocery store.

Don’t buy in bulk if you can’t eat it before it goes bad

Purchasing products in bulk can save you money, however, make sure that you are buying storage bags or containers that will be able to store the product for a long time without going bad! Buying in bulk is fine as long as the food doesn’t spoil before you are able to eat it. Choose fruits and vegetables that can be easily stored for a long amount of time such as apples, potatoes, onions, and more! For other items such as meats that need to be frozen right away, make sure there is enough freezer space available!

Don’t go grocery shopping while hungry

Everyone knows that when you go grocery shopping while hungry, then suddenly your cart is full of all the goodies and different foods that you didn’t originally plan on getting! Going grocery shopping when you’re hungry can lead to purchasing items that aren’t necessary. So if you must shop for food when you’re already hungry, make sure not to buy too many snacks such as candy and chips-stick to buying healthy necessities!

Save money by cooking/baking instead of eating out

If you’re trying to save money, then cooking/baking is the way to go. There’s no better feeling than saving money and not sacrificing taste either! Make sure to write a list before going grocery shopping so that you aren’t tempted to buy any other products. If you really want to save some serious cash in your grocery budget, then you will want to try and cook/bake as much as possible – it’s easy and rewarding!

Watch unit prices and compare them to net weight

You can save a lot of money by watching for lower unit prices (when an item is marked down) and then comparing that price with the net weight of the product. The bigger or better deal will be the one you buy! Let’s say that there are two items: Broccoli in a net weight of 8 oz, and broccoli in a net weight of 10 oz. Let’s assume that the first item is $1.00/kg and the second item is $1.50/kg. The unit price for both products is the same (one dollar per 8 oz), and the net weight is different so you would compare that price (8 oz at $1.00/kg vs 10 oz at $1.50/kg). The cheaper item will be the one with more gram weight!

Look for coupons when shopping

There are a ton of great ways to save money when buying food, and one of them is by looking for coupons while you’re shopping. Some stores even offer double or triple points on deal items which can really add up to some great savings! If you have a favorite product, but it’s expensive – look for coupons elsewhere and make sure to check online. Just remember that if you get a coupon, be sure to stock up on the deal. Buying produce and products that go bad soon is a great way to save money!

Meal planning can really help you save money

If you have a busy lifestyle, then it may be tough for you to cook or bake every night after work or school. Sometimes it’s more beneficial to meal plan-that way you can prepare every night and be set for the week. Meal planning is a great way to save money because you are buying all your ingredients in bulk, and then using them efficiently-which means that no food goes bad or gets wasted!

Finally, before going grocery shopping think about what you need or want to make for dinner that night. There is no point in buying any food that isn’t on your list because it will just end up going bad and being a waste of money. Don’t go above the budget either-all you need are the essentials which mean that if an item goes over budget, then don’t buy it! Shopping smart for food can be tough, but with these tips, you’ll have the tools to save money and eat healthier.

Good luck on your next shopping trip!
