Local Organization Again Shaving Heads & Raising Money for Childhood Cancer Research
On Sunday, September 19th, a local organization called Lowcountry Bald will raise money for childhood cancer research with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder for childhood cancer research. The event will be held outside in Seaside Farms in the parking lot behind Jeff’s Barbering (1971 Riviera Drive, Mount Pleasant) from 1 pm to 5 pm.
Volunteers (“shavees”) raise money by agreeing to have their heads shaved bald at a public event to stand in solidarity with children that lose their hair during cancer treatment. For their brave sacrifice, shavees ask their friends and families for donations. Shavees sometimes form teams to involve friends and co-workers in raising money together.
There are currently 30 shavees, including 5 women, who will be shorn at the event. The organization is seeking more heroes to be shaved and raise donations for this cause. Most importantly, over $30,000 has been raised to date with thanks to the thoughtful and generous donors. Their goal is $50,000!
There will also be a ‘Bald Crawl,’ a family version of a pub crawl, to show support for the local merchants in Seaside Farms. Attendees can plan to spend a couple of hours cheering shavees and enjoying food, drinks, ice cream, and pastires from more than 10 sops within the single block of Seaside Farms. Fill out your BINGO card as you stroll the stores and return it to win prizes. Balloon art and face painting will be available. Plus, Rene Russell and The Bottom End will be providing the entertainment.
