With August’s arrival and the end of many camps, you may find yourself trying to plan fun activities with your kids before they throw themselves into their schoolwork. Thankfully, Charleston offers many great outings for families that can help you form long-lasting memories.

For example, you can take your family to one of many great beaches in the area, such as Folly Beach County Park, for fun events such as “Evening in the Park,” held on August 19th.

These events can help your child practice their social skills or work with other issues; if you are looking for parenting advice, consider consulting a mental health resource like BetterHelp.

Consider some of the following activities when planning your family get-togethers for the end of the summer.

Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry

Address: 25 Ann St.

If your kids love letting their imagination run loose, the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry could be a fantastic way to spend your time. You can explore a castle, captain a pirate ship, and enjoy yourselves at an art studio as a family.

There is also an outdoor play space where your kid can meet friends and have a good time all around. Thanks to the museum’s participation in the Association of Children’s Museums Reciprocal Network, your membership guarantees that you get into a museum involved in the association for free.

Dock Street Theatre

135 Church St.

Dock Street Theatre is the oldest running theatre in the United States. It was fully restored to preserve the historical connotations since it was the stage for many of Charleston Stage’s musical productions.

The company puts out kid-friendly shows, including Beauty and the Beast and The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanely.

Charleston Stage is returning to in-person performances in September, so while your kids may be in school, look into getting tickets now and get your kids excited to see a show during an upcoming weekend.

Patriots Point

40 Patriots Point Blvd, Mount Pleasant

While watching elaborate productions is one great way to spend time with family, you may also consider exploring historical locales so you and your kids can learn more about the city.

Patriots Point, across Charleston Harbor at the base of the Ravenel Bridge, is the perfect place. Your family can explore historic naval warships, such as the U.S.S. Yorktown, which played a role in recovering the Apollo 8 astronauts.

Kids can also climb into fighter planes, take a tour and learn more about what being a soldier meant during wartime, and use a flight simulator. For kids under 6 years of age, admission is free, which is a great incentive for parents to take their kids out to Patriots Point.

Beaches

If you want to go all out and have fun, Charleston’s beaches are one perfect way to close out an exciting summer.

According to residents, Charleston’s beaches are some of the cleanest in the nation and while they provide beautiful scenery throughout the year, it’s especially evident during the nice weather in the summer and early fall.

Isle of Palms

This easy trip has accessible public restrooms and changing facilities that are clean and maintained constantly. There is also a variety of food, such as Acme Lowcountry Kitchen and ice cream options.

Sullivan’s Island

The beach’s relaxed vibe makes it stand out, although it lacks public facilities. However, the beach’s natural landscape and the small-town atmosphere are a wonderful experience.

Kiawah Island

After a 30-minute drive out of Charleston, you’ll find that Kiawah Island sports pristine beaches and various luxury resort options. There is also a golf resort for you and the family, or if your kids would rather enjoy the ocean waves, they can have fun at the beach.

Have fun with your family

No matter which location you choose, the most important thing is to have fun quality time with your family. You could also travel outside of Charleston and make a fun road trip out of the experience. We hope that you enjoy your time with the family as much as possible.
