Pet Helpers Spay/Neuter Clinic Temporarily Closes to Public

Published

Due to staffing shortages, Pet Helpers Adoption Center has made the decision to temporarily close their spay/neuter clinic for all public owned animals until vital positions are filled, including Associate Veterinary and Veterinary Assistants.

“Our top priority at Pet Helpers Spay/Neuter Clinic is to ensure the safety of the animals that come through our clinic doors and we cannot do so if we are limited with experienced support staff in the clinic,” said Pet Helpers Executive Director Melissa Susko.

All shelter operations are still in operation during normal business hours by appointment through office@pethelpers.org and their vaccine clinic will still be open to the public from 8 am to 12 am on Thursdays with appointments made through spay@pethelpers.org .

Pet Helpers Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter Clinic, like many other shelters and clinics, has experienced difficulty maintaining a full staff in crucial positions such as veterinarians and veterinary assistants. These roles greatly affect the rate that cats and dogs are adopted out.

“Staffing shortages cause a domino effect that poses a significant threat to the viability of the Pet Helpers and shelters all over the Lowcountry; even more so when we’re looking to fill important positions like veterinarians.” Susko said. “We can’t continue to serve our community with low-cost spay/neuter and preventative services if we don’t have the support staff in place to do so. And it ripples down to the shelter as animals’ length of stay is extended due to an overworked veterinary team trying to juggle 120 shelter animals, on top of performing low-cost spay/neuter surgeries weekly for community cats brought in through our Trap Neuter Release program (TNR).”

To find career opportunities at Pet Helpers as an Associate Veterinarian, Veterinary Assistant, or Clinic Front Desk Associate, the public is encouraged to go to pethelpers.org and to email any resumés to msusko@pethelpers.org
