Three Summerville Area Eateries Have Become Regular Stops For Breakfast Lovers

Jeff Walker, Restaurant Business Review

Perhaps growing up in Massachusetts gave brother and sister Marc and Julie Cotone gained an appreciation for the all American diner, a classic eatery common to folks raised in the New York tri-state area as well as New England. While several diners stay open 24/7, for many patrons diners are primarily associated for breakfast and lunch.

Building on that concept Marc and Julia had very little reservations securing the franchise rights for Eggs Up Grill in greater Summerville and North Charleston. Over the past several years they’ve opened locations in Cane Bay, Knightsville, and Ladson.

Since founder Chris Skodras threw open the doors in 1997 to the very first location on Pawleys Island, Eggs Up Grill has become America’s daily breakfast kitchen for thousands of regulars in over 45 locations throughout 11 states. Casual, comfy, warm, and inviting, think of Eggs Up Grill as the brunch alternative to your neighborhood tavern, where every server knows your name and Cliff and Norm (Cheers reference) are welcome to come in, sit down, and enjoy awesome comfort food.

Eggs Up Grill’s everyday menu pays tribute to good old fashioned staple breakfasts short order cooks, and moms have been preparing for decades. We’re talking eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, pancakes, biscuits, hash browns, toast, and creamy grits. Mix and match your favorites or enjoy dozens of signature creations like Bananas Foster French Toast, two slices of cinnamon swirl French toast, layered under sautéed banana slices, whipped cream, powdered sugar and drizzling in caramel sauce.

If you have a sweet tooth Eggs Up Grill can easily satisfy the craving. Their Baked Peaches & Cream Pancakes begin with two sumptuous two golden-brown buttermilk pancakes topped with caramelized peaches, a dollop of sweet cream cheese frosting and sprinkled with a hint of powdered sugar. Some would say it’s ‘awesome sauce’! Patriots might enjoy the Red, White & Blue, basically a Belgian waffle topped with strawberries, bananas and blueberries, under whipped cream.

Hearty appetites are always welcome at Eggs Up Grill with the eatery focused on meat, potatoes, and their core morning fare eggs, served fried, scrambled, over easy, and in half a dozen signature or build your own omelets.

Think Shrimp & Grits are just for dinner, well think again. Enjoy plump shrimp surrounded by andouille sausage, green peppers, sautéed onions, blanketed in a Swiss cheese omelet, served with fire-roasted tomato & spinach grit. Northerners (and plenty live in greater Charleston) might embrace the Philly Cheese Steak Omelet, thinly sliced grilled steak with American cheese, onions and peppers. Two great tasting omelets uniting the north and the south. Very clever!

Maybe you’re the early morning riser who carries a hungry-man or hungry-woman appetite to the breakfast table. I suggest the four egg Texas Farmhouse Omelet teeming with bacon, andouille sausage, home fries, mushrooms, pepper jack cheese, pickled jalapenos and green chiles. Topped with sausage gravy and hatch chiles (unique native to Hatch Valley of New Mexico). It’s a sure fire way to arouse the palate whether you pop in at 6am or mid morning.

If you order from the breakfast classics portion of the menu you’ll leave full and with a smile on your face. Among the familiar favs are Steak & Eggs including a 6oz. sirloin complete with grilled tomato, and garlic toast. Want an early morning platter that will stick to your ribs, I suggest Southern Staples, aka two eggs, a buttermilk sausage biscuit and a side of sausage gravy. Both entrees come with choice of home fries or grits. If you’re nice they may substitute your sides for hash or fruit. Plenty of tasty options abound.

Can’t make up your mind, but still feeling old school. The Grand Classic has it all, two eggs any way you want them, bacon, sausage, your choice of toast, with a side. Better ask for more napkins! Are you a handheld breakfast type? Eggs Up Grill offers up four signature sandwiches that come in four different varieties.

You can get the Egg Bomb BLT on a brioche bun, a Waffle Sandwich, the Biscuit-Wich (egg, sausage & cheese) with a side of sausage gravy. An easy way to wake up the taste buds is with the Breakfast Burrito (eggs, sausage, peppers, onions, & pepper jack cheese) set down before you with sour cream and a side of salsa. Thinking outside the box, perhaps build your own morning creation using toasted bread, a bagel, or a wrap. Variety at Eggs Up Grill is just a slice away.

Just as the seasons change, so too do the specials at Eggs Up Grill. Currently from their Griddle & Grin selections they offer four limited time Fall kitchen creations, two of which reflect southwestern fare. Choose between the Chorizo Breakfast Quesadilla (how mind blowing early in the morning), and the Chomelet (crumbled chorizo sausage w/ pepper jack cheese, diced bell peppers & onions wrapped in omelet form), served hot & fresh with your choice of toast and a side.

Of course if you just have to give in to your sweet craving, than the Caramel Apple Crisp Pancakes drenched in caramelized fire roasted Fuji apples, caramel sauce and powdered sugar will do. There is nothing wrong with having dessert for breakfast or lunch. As a matter of fact there is nothing wrong with having scrambled eggs or avocado toast at 1pm. Live a little.

And what about lunch. While traditional breakfast items are served up more than 80 percent of the time, Eggs Up Grill do carry the standard lunch / brunch menu including sumptuous salads, juicy burgers, as well as familiar standby sandwiches and wraps. The Philly Cheese Steak Burger is a whole lot ‘brotherly love’ in an American classic.

You’ve heard it said, ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’, well I’m hear to tell it’s true. However breakfast doesn’t always need to be eggs and bacon, or your favorite muffin. Breakfast has changed, and ‘BRUNCH’ is one of the best words in our mealtime vocabulary.

Love a Philly cheese steak, how about having it in wrap complete with sautéed, onions, peppers and good old American cheese. Their house-made chicken salad is as tasty as your grandmother makes, and served with sautéed spinach & melted Swiss cheese on grilled Tuscan bread, it’s off the charts awesome!

Who doesn’t love a nice juicy burger. Well you can take that up a notch and feast on Eggs Up Grill’s Good Morning Burger. Basically it’s a mushroom & onion omelet, layered over a steak burger, oozing with Swiss cheese, bacon, spinach leaves, and their hot bacon dressing, all on a brioche bun.

Darn tootin’ you’ll enjoy a great cup of coffee, Coke products, or your preferred glass of juice (orange, apple, tomato, & cranberry), but if you really want to go all out and seize the whole brunch thing, than kindly ask your server to bring a mimosa to your table. Eggs Up Grill keep bubbly wine on hand to concoct your favorite alcohol fruit infused sparkling complement to any entree of choice. The Apple Cider Mimosa is the fall adult beverage special. It’s like an apple orchard exploding in your mouth. A cupful of caffeinated beverages to satisfy with dark roast, decaf, lattes, mocha, French vanilla cappuccino, and hot chocolate.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention perhaps the one dish that put Eggs Up Grill on the ‘great American food map’. Their Founder’s Hash Benedict has it all. It begins with their in house blend of corned beef hash, potatoes, onions and special spices, blanketed over a toasted English muffin, topped with two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Served with their famous home fries, grits or fresh fruit, it’s the equivalent of getting a warm hug at the breakfast table.

I know you’re curious, and the answer is yes! Eggs Up Grill do have a children’s menu for little ones 10 and under. Among their varied pick three selections include waffles, pancakes, omelets, and the always to go kids favorite grilled cheese. If that doesn’t work I feel certain a kids cheeseburger with chocolate milk will satisfy their hunger.

They haven’t forgotten vegans. Eggs Up Grill have a few options for non meat eaters. There’s Avocado Toast you can enjoy with or without eggs. You have a handful of salads that you can modify to your taste, and a couple of Veggie Omelets stuffed with sautéed mushrooms, peppers, onions and tomatoes.

Eggs Up Grill hasn’t re-invented breakfast, brunch, or lunch, however they have re-imagined the whole experience. They’ve taken the best of the best early morning and midday meals, and spiced up the bill of fare with several signature dishes with the end result being an inviting menu catering to several tastes. Enjoy a warm meal time hug from 6am until 2pm daily at Eggs Up Grill. Good food, good vibes, and great customer service, all in a clean well kept and well lit eatery. Nice!

Husband and wife team, Kevin and Teresa Arnold are the proud owner operators of the West Ashley location. The couple who spent several years in Knoxville TN before relocating to Charleston, worked alongside the Cotone’s before deciding they wanted to branch out, and run their own Eggs Up Grill.

While the pandemic didn’t factor in their plans back in 2019, the Arnold’s faced the challenges head on, throwing open their doors in May of 2020. With lots of windows, and more pastel colors the overall decor is warm and inviting, allowing for plenty of sunshine to fill the dining hall. The couple are committed to customer service and serving up the same great menu that has put Eggs Up Grill on the breakfast map for over 20 years.

Come in and be treated like family, and maybe you’ll be fortunate to have Beverly as your server. She’s been with Eggs Up Grill for nearly two decades and started with the company at the original location in Pawley’s Island, and more importantly Beverly ‘will do everything to make you smile’.

Marc and Julie Cotone own and operate three locations surrounding greater Summerville including 3679 Ladson Road, 1718 State Road (Hwy 176) Cane Bay of Summerville, and a third location at 1585 Central Ave, Summerville (Knightsville).  The Arnold’s operate  the Eggs Up Grill  at 3875 W Ashley Circle in Charleston.
