Press Release

In an effort to ensure a transparent and participatory redistricting process, South Carolina Women in Leadership (SC WIL) is encouraging all South Carolina voters to review new legislative district maps and contact their S.C. Senate and S.C. House Representatives in advance of a vote by the General Assembly in early December that will make the new district maps voting law for the next 10 years.

The way district lines are drawn determines who can and can not run for office in a district, what district citizens vote in, and how responsive a representative is to their constituents. SC WIL is calling on citizens to review the new maps, then call, text, and write their legislators, and amplify concerns about or support for the new district maps on social media by tagging representatives and other political influencers using #WeAreWatching. Issues voters should look for include new districts that primarily protect incumbents, break up communities of interest including minority communities, and that unnecessarily split counties and municipalities.

SC WIL has made extensive information and resources on the S.C. redistricting process available on their website including:

The S.C. Senate and House Redistricting committees have stated their commitments to a transparent redistricting process. An informed and engaged constituency will provide the legislatures with valuable community input to make sure our elections are fair for the next decade.
