Park & Grove to Host Transformation Table’s Afghan Pop Up on December 6th
Transformation Table, a mission-based company that creates space among strangers in the Charleston community through hosting intimate dinners in diverse community members’ homes, is set to host an Afghan Pop Up at Park & Grove on December 6th from 6 pm to 9 pm. All proceeds will go to Lutheran Services Carolinas and their efforts to successfully resettle Afghan refugees in Charleston.
Guests can sample a variety of Afghan staples from Chef Fauiza Garner like Bulanee (potato and scallions stuffed in thin dough), Kabuli Palau (boneless lamb shank with rice, caramelized carrots, and raisins), and Firnee (Afghan pudding made with milk and pistachios). Garner is a native of Afghanistan and has been sharing her love of Afghani food through Fauzia’s Kitchen. Wine will be provided by Grassroots.
When the Taliban took over control of Afghanistan in August, Garner met with Transformation Table’s founder Tina Singleton to discuss the country’s disturbing turn of events and mass evacuations.
“Imagine leaving your family, friends, job, home, and country for good, not knowing whether or not you will ever be able to return,” said Singleton. “You are a judge, a government worker, a student, a women’s rights activist, a small business owner, or a stay-at-home mother. You are evacuated out of your country and find yourself in a country you do not know and have to begin your life all over again. You must navigate a system you are unfamiliar with and must find housing, a job, and learn a new language. If you have children, you must find ways to occupy their time as you figure out how they will learn English and attend school.”
This Transformation Table dinner presents Charleston residents with the rare chance to experience Afghan food while helping refugees in desperate need this holiday season. Executive Director of Refugee Resettlement Bedrija Jazic, and his staff will also be at Park & Grove to discuss how the Charleston community can support our new neighbors.
