Basic Kitchen Launches Plant-Based Challenge

Published

on

Healthy downtown hot spot Basic Kitchen (82 Wentworth St.) today announced the Plant Based Challenge, a “month-long commitment to whole foods and clean eating inspired by the restaurant’s core values: seasonal produce, food education, and local businesses.” For the month of January, the restaurant will shift its menu to solely offer plant-based dishes and drinks and will partner with four local tastemakers to offer weekly specials throughout the month.

Inspired by Chef Charlie Layton’s recent shift to an all-vegan lifestyle, Basic Kitchen felt that a healthy “reset” in January could embolden guests to take on New Year’s resolutions.

Each week, the restaurant will partner with a local tastemaker, highlighting two special dishes and teachings about a plant-based lifestyle. The lineup of tastemakers is as follows:

  • Week of January 3 – Lauren Zimmerman, MD, RD at Synchronicity, Charleston Wellness Center and the Dreamboats Campaign
  • Week of January 10 – Dana Bufalino, founder of Kind Roots and National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach
  • Week of January 17 – Cynthia Groseclose, chef, food artist, and founder Plante Cakes
  • Week of January 24 – Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, local gastroenterologist and New York Times bestselling author

Leading the helm at Basic Kitchen, Chef Charlie Layton has long been interested in food-based education and doing so by creating healthy approachable dishes that excite customers about eating better. Over the past three years, Layton has worked his way into the best shape of his life, becoming vegan and is now preparing for the challenge of a lifetime – rowing the Atlantic Ocean, unassisted. Layton and Basic Projects founder, Ben Towill, team name The Dreamboats, will participate in the 2022 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, raising money along the way for two environmentally-focused initiatives, The Green Heart Project and 2041.

The series kicks off on January 1st and will continue throughout the month.

Basic Kitchen is located at 82 Wentworth Street and is open for dinner Sunday – Thursday from 5 pm – 9 pm, Friday + Saturday from 5 pm – 10 pm with lunch service on Monday – Friday from 11 am – 3 pm, and weekend brunch from 10 am – 3 pm. Reservations are available on Resy.
