CCPL and the Lowcountry Food Bank Expand Afterschool Snacks Program
The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) and the Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) are working together to alleviate child hunger in Charleston by expanding their afterschool snacks program to four additional library branches. The free, nutritious snacks are available to kids and teens under the age of 18 from 3 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
This program, which began in 2020, will now be available at eight total branches, allowing CCPL and LCFB to serve a wider range of areas in need throughout the County. Branches offering snacks include:
- Baxter-Patrick James Island (1858 South Grimball Rd)
- Cooper River Memorial Library (2036 Cherokee St)
- Hurd/St. Andrews (1735 N. Woodmere Dr)
- John L. Dart Library (1067 King St)
- John’s Island (3531 Maybank Hwy)
- Main Library (68 Calhoun St.)
- Otranto Road (2261 Otranto Rd)
- St. Paul’s Hollywood Library (5130 Hwy 165, Hollywood)
“We are thrilled to be able to double the number of library branches where kids and teens can find a consistent source of food after school,” said Devon Andrews, CCPL Associate Director, Community Engagement. “We are so grateful to our partners at the Lowcountry Food Bank for making this program possible!”
Snacks are being provided through the LCFB’s Kids Café program, and feature nutritious options such as fruit, cheese, yogurt and muffins.
“Kids Café aims to help alleviate child hunger through the provision of nutritious meals served in after-school settings to children at-risk of food insecurity,” said LCFB Child Hunger Programs manager Kara Moore. “We are proud to continue to work with the library to further our mission to end childhood hunger in coastal South Carolina.”
