Brookgreen Gardens today shared their schedule of events for the month of January. See below for events and exhibitions rolling out this month to kick off the new year.

Programming:

Photographing Birds of the Southeast, Jan. 5, 2022 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

January 5 is National Bird Day, designated by the Avian Welfare Coalition. Enjoy beautiful photographs of birds shared by photographer George DeCamp and learn more about bird watching with a camera instead of binoculars.

Making House Plants Feel More at Home, Jan. 10, 2022 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Join Kerry Rapp, Manager of Brookgreen’s Greenhouse and Nursery Collections, for a presentation about some of the most popular houseplants, how to select them and how to take care of them. Houseplants have many benefits including reducing anxiety, elevating mood, and improving air quality in your home. Learn more about taking care of houseplants on Jan. 10, Houseplant Appreciation Day, at Brookgreen in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium.

Atalaya, The Huntington’s Winter Retreat, Jan. 19, 2022 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Enjoy a virtual tour of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington’s winter estate, Atalaya, with Ranger Mike Walker from Huntington Beach State Park. Atalaya was designed as a place of respite and a place for the Huntingtons to be inspired by nature and work on their respective art forms. This Moorish-inspired building is now a National Historic Landmark, along with Brookgreen Gardens. Through this virtual visit of Atalaya, learn what first brought the Huntingtons to South Carolina, why they chose this area for their winter home and how the construction of Atalaya benefitted the community during the Great Depression.

Reign of Rice Lecture Series, 2022 Cultural Environments that Sustain Rice Heritage, Jan. 22, 2022 1 p.m.

The first lecture in the three-part Reign of Rice Lecture Series will take place on Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium at Brookgreen Gardens. The first lecturer will be Corrie Claiborne, Ph.D. giving the lecture “Literary Cultural Environments that Support Rice Heritage.” Claiborne is an associate professor of English at Morehouse College.

The Chanticleer From Clay to Bronze; How to Build a Public Sculpture, Jan. 26, 2022 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Bryan Rapp, Director of Master Sculpture Program at Brookgreen, will offer a presentation on how he constructed the Chanticleer sculpture for Coastal Carolina University. During this hour-long presentation, Rapp will share images and videos of the process from clay to bronze. The event will take place at Brookgreen in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium.

Brookgreen 101 – Recent Art and History Acquisitions, Jan. 27, 2022 1 p.m.

Brookgreen 101 is a public information program offered usually on the fourth Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. in the Lowcountry Auditorium. The topics may cover various aspects of Brookgreen Gardens including the collections, property, history, people, poetry, art history, corporate history, the founders, and Brookgreen purposes. Each program lasts approximately one hour. This month’s topic is “Recent Art and History Acquisitions.” The appearance of special guests and the program topics are subject to change. Exhibitions:

Lowcountry Rhythms; Resilience and Perseverance, Jan. 7, 2022 12 p.m. – March 31, 2022 4:30 p.m.

“Lowcountry Rhythms; Resilience and Perseverance” by visual artist Alvin Glen will be displayed in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium from Jan. 7 – March 31, 2022. Exhibit hours are daily from noon to 4:30 p.m. Glen, a native of Dorchester, SC, creates fine art using pastels, mixed media drawing, and printmaking.

American Animalier: The Life and Art of Anna Hyatt Huntington, Jan. 29 – April 24, 2022

This retrospective of the works of Brookgreen’s founder, award-winning sculptor and patron Anna Hyatt Huntington, will present sculpture spanning the scope of her prolific career from the late 19th century to a few years before her death in 1973. The works are from the Brookgreen collection as well as on loan from private collections, art dealers, and museums and will be on display in the Rosen Gallery.
