Press Release

In playwright John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning drama Doubt, (opening February 4th at the Queen Street Playhouse) a progressive priest’s entire reputation and career comes into question when a strict and by-the-book nun accuses him of  impropriety with the school’s only African-American student.

Father Flynn states in one of his sermons in the play, ”Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty.” Although written in 2004, long before social media posts could take down an entire career with just a handful of words or unsubstantiated accusations, Shanley’s thought provoking drama now serves as a cautionary tale of the power of sewing doubt and where the line is drawn between suspicious and belief.

Sister Aloysius suspects that popular and progressive new priest Father Flynn has behaved inappropriately with the school’s first integrated student based on a simple observation reported by younger nun Sister James. Armed with nothing but her own certainty and her apparent distaste for the new priest’s modern attitudes, Sister Aloysius begins a campaign of doubt against the priest, but is it a struggle for power or a battle for the truth? This brilliantly written play keeps the audience guessing long after the final words have been said on stage.

Directed by Footlight Players’ own Executive Director Brian Porter and featuring a stellar cast of Charleston talent including Samantha Smith, Andrew Murano, Leah Van Horn and Letty James,  Doubt continues the theatre’s well-received and intriguing 90th anniversary season.
