New Season of “Travels with Darley” Showcases South Carolina’s Lowcountry
The new season of Travels with Darley featuring PBS personality and South Carolina native Darley Newman is debuting on SCETV on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm and on ETV World on Saturdays at 11 am. One of the episodes, “Charleston & The Liberty Trail,” will feature the South Carolina Lowcountry.
The episode broadcasts on Wednesday, February 16th at 7:30 pm on ETV and again on March 12th at 11AM on ETVW. For the half hour episode, Newman filmed in South Carolina in September, traveling through Charleston and the Lowcountry along part of the state’s brand new Liberty Trail. The episode invites travelers to uncover lesser-known sites and fascinating figures related to the Revolutionary War.
“It was really special to return to my home state to film,” said Newman, who grew up in Myrtle Beach. “I was able to reconnect with many friends that my family and I have known since my childhood, while also capturing important and lesser-known stories related to South Carolina’s rich and diverse history and culture. I look forward to having South Carolinians watch the new season and learn about new places they can explore in their own backyard.”
Newman’s episode explores South Carolina history with a healthy dose of food, culture, and outdoor adventures. At Hampton Plantation and at The Grocery with James Beard Award-nominated Chef Kevin Johnson, she charts the history and modern flavors of Carolina Gold rice. The “Charleston & The Liberty Trail” episode also features Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit, T.W. Graham & Co. in McClellanville and Gillie’s Seafood, where Chef Sean Mendes helps Darley add her grandmother to his “wall of grandmas.”
Newman also takes viewers to historic landmarks in Charleston and Berkeley County, like Marion Square, Hopsewee Plantation, Mepkin Abbey, St. James-Santee Parish Episcopal Church, and Biggin Church and attends a Revolutionary War reenactment at Fort Fair Lawn. In the Francis Marion National Forest, Chris Crolley of Coastal Expeditions takes Newman kayaking at the site of a Revolutionary War battle. In Charleston, Alphonso Brown leads Darley to historic homes and shares Gullah cultural insights (right).
Newman will also share her expertise and new season content in January and February during livestreamed Zoom events with the Smithsonian Associates, including a special February livestream on February 24th on “Discover the Liberty Trail.”
