South Carolina Domestic Workers Endorse McLeod for Governor, Matthews for Senate

Care in Action, the policy and advocacy home for more than 2.5 million home care workers, nannies, and house cleaners across the United States, announced Friday that they have endorsed Mia McLeod (right) for Governor and Krystle Matthews for U.S. Senate.

“Mia McLeod and Krystle Matthews understand the challenges facing working people across South Carolina,” said Care in Action South Carolina State Director Maria Reyes. “With so much on the line in this election, we are incredibly proud to endorse their campaigns today and to work with them to protect voting rights here in South Carolina and ensure our economy works for everyone. Women of color have historically been discounted and their power ignored. That will change this November when we give Mia McLeod the keys to the Governor’s Mansion and send Krystle Matthews to represent South Carolina in Washington.”

Care in Action, a 501(c)(4) organization, believes that women of color, especially the more than 625,000 women of color registered to vote in South Carolina, are key to progressive victories and electing candidates who will support all families and workers in policy decisions, including domestic workers and immigrants. In 2020, the domestic worker movement mobilized on a large-scale for the first time in recent memory, contacting voters 27 million times during election season and helping deliver the White House and control of the U.S. Senate to the Democratic Party.

“Mia McLeod and Krystle Matthews are the right women for this moment in South Carolina’s history,” added Sobaika Mirza, interim Co-Executive Director of Care in Action. “At a time when voting rights are under attack and so many families are struggling just to make ends meet, Mia and Krystle will provide the leadership and vision that the state needs right now. They stand head and shoulders above their opponents in this campaign. We look forward to helping them both win the Democratic nomination this June and march on to victory in November.”

Care in Action was founded in 2016 at the request of domestic workers who knew they needed to build political power in the face of overwhelming attacks. The endorsements announced today were made after extensive discussions among domestic workers in South Carolina and a meeting of Care in Action South Carolina’s Workers Committee, which voted unanimously to endorse the McLeod and Matthews campaigns.
