Charleston Basketball completed a regular season sweep over Northeastern for just the second time in program history, beating the Huskies, 83-72, in Boston on Tuesday night. The big road win improved Charleston to 15-12 on the season and 7-8 in CAA play as the Cougars launched their lengthy road trip with an emphatic statement.
Despite leading scorer John Meeks being limited to two minutes of action with an injury, CofC shot a blistering 58.1 percent, its second-highest effort on the season second only to the last time the Cougars played Northeastern this year. Charleston made eight triples and had six Cougars chip in at least seven points with an efficient, balanced attack.
Coming off back-to-back double-doubles, senior Dimitrius Underwood was stellar again, racking up 19 points, eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists to lead CofC. Freshman Reyne Smith added 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Smith hit four triples and now has 74 on the season, breaking CofC’s all-time freshmen record for made 3-pointers.
Ben Burnham was electric on both ends. He finished with 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting, four boards and a highlight-reel blocked shot. Burnham helped set the tone early for the Cougars as he threw down a vicious poster dunk on a Northeastern defender to spark a 7-0 CofC run that pushed Charleston ahead 18-10 in the first half.
The Huskies responded with six first-half 3-pointers, but CofC kept pace in a high-octane, high-scoring opening frame that saw the Cougars take a 43-41 edge into halftime. Both teams traded blows for the first 13 minutes of the second half in a game that featured 10 lead changes and tough shot-making.
With CofC leading 65-63, the Cougars made their game-defining push as Smith and Raekwon Horton buried two three-pointers after an Underwood bucket to surge the Cougars in front by 10. Charleston would lead by at least six the rest of the way to cruise to an 11-point victory.
Charleston has a quick turnaround as it continues its four-game road trip at Delaware on Thursday night. Tip-off in Newark is slated for 7 p.m. ET on FloSports.
