The Charleston Battery announced Monday the signing of defender Brett St. Martin (right) to the 2022 roster, pending league and federation approval. St. Martin signs his first professional contract and bolsters the Battery back line following a standout career at the University of Maryland.

“It feels great to join the Battery, everyone here is bought into the culture of the team and establishing a winning environment,” said St. Martin. “The players and coaches have been very welcoming and that’s made the move easier. We have a great group of guys here that are pushing every day to get better.”

The 22-year-old arrives in the Lowcountry after previously being selected 50th overall by Sporting Kansas City in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. St. Martin impressed during the 2022 Breeze Airways™ Carolina Challenge Cup, playing against Inter Miami CF and Columbus Crew, and scored in the friendly against Coastal Carolina University on February 25th.

A native of Mount Airy, Maryland, St. Martin was a two-time All-Big Ten section and two-time captain of the Terps. He appeared in 61 matches during his career with Maryland, developing into an anchor of the team’s back line at both center back and right back.

St. Martin is no stranger to big games, having helped Maryland win the 2018 national title. The defender played every minute of the shortened 2021 spring season as a junior, earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors, and was a fixture in the Terps’ defense in the fall 2021 season that tallied 19 clean sheets. Following his senior season, St. Martin was named First Team All-Big Ten and United Soccer Coaches All-North Region.

Battery Head Coach Conor Casey looks forward to bringing aboard St. Martin to the defensive corps.

“Brett is a very smart player and he’s got a lot of athleticism, which really drew us to him,” said Coach Casey. “He’s pretty good with both feet and can play as either a center back or as an outside back, so he brings versatility. We’re hoping that he’s going to keep pushing the guys forward and fight for a starting spot.”

St. Martin is ready for the new challenge and eager for the regular season to kick off.

“I look forward to continuing to develop as a player to become the best version of myself, as well as helping the team in any way possible,” said St. Martin “I can’t wait to get to know the fans more and see a packed stadium for our first home game against Tulsa.”

St. Martin brings the squad size to 23 players and will wear the number 4 for the Battery.
