Starting a new life in a country abroad is one of the most rewarding things you could set out to do. It’s all about meeting new people, seeing exciting things, and experiencing different cultures from your own. It’s definitely the best way to get to know yourself as a person too. How will you act once you are pushed out of your comfort zone?

Whether it’s simply for a few years or a few decades, we recommend that everybody takes some time to move to another country. We promise that you won’t regret it. If you’ve always dreamt of leaving the United States of America, but you’ve never known where to settle, keep reading, this is the article for you. We’ve curated a list that includes seven of our favourite destinations for a new life outside of the USA.

New Zealand

Although this destination may be 8752.4 miles and 16 hours away on a plane ride, it is definitely worth a visit. If you’re a sucker for nature, New Zealand’s impressive waterfalls, ancient forests, and active volcanoes will surely be enough to convince you to stay. It’s also home to the beautiful indigenous Māori culture, it’s an excellent producer of wine, and not to mention, an English-speaking country, an important factor that can help you settle in faster.

Australia

Not too far from its neighbour New Zealand, is Australia. Here, you experience metropolitan areas like Sydney and Melbourne that are similar to cities like San Francisco or Chicago. However, you can also opt for more tranquil locations like Port Douglas and Byron Bay. Just make sure that you opt for health insurance for US citizens living overseas, as an unexpected visit to the doctors can put you out of pocket.

Canada

If you want to live in another English-speaking country, but you’re not too keen on moving half-way across the globe, why not settle down in Canada? You’ll never be too far from your friends or family, and you’ll still get to enjoy a new lifestyle abroad. It’s been named one of the safest countries in the world and it also boasts of a better work-life balance than the United States. It’s also a great destination for citizens that love being outdoors and enjoying beautiful natural landscapes.

Costa Rica

This country in Central America can be compared to a slice of paradise. With amazing beaches, tropical rainforests, and over 500,000 species of animals, this country is truly one of the world’s most biodiverse locations. It’s also earned its appeal amongst American expats because of its political stability and long-standing democratic status. It’s an extremely beautiful country to live in and it also has some of the best medical care systems.

Portugal

If you’re looking for some European sunshine, look no further than Portugal. The cost-of-living in this country is relatively cheap. It also has plenty of options to suit any expat. For example, if you prefer the busy city, Lisbon is the perfect place for you. However, if you’re looking for something more chilled and coastal, you should check out the Algarve area. It’s also the perfect place if you enjoy a good old fashioned road trip. Portugal is roughly the same size as Indiana and Spain’s border is a mere two hours away from Lisbon.

Malaysia

For those who prefer the Asian continent, we’ve included Malaysia on our list. This country has a very low cost of living, especially in comparison with North America or Europe. Therefore, expats in Malaysia can enjoy a life of luxury for a fraction of the cost. Some of the most popular emigration destinations in Malaysia include the national capital of Kuala Lumpur, George Town, and Johor Bahru. It’s one of the least populated countries in Asia, meaning you can truly enjoy the vast countryside, rain forests, and beaches that it has to offer.

France

If you’ve always dreamt about a romantic life in France, why not just go for it? This country has plenty of picturesque landscapes to choose from, including snow-capped mountains and sandy beaches. It’s business friendly, has a great healthcare system, and an excellent education system if you’re thinking about raising kids. Not to mention, it’s also one of the world’s largest exporters of wine, which is always an added bonus.

When you move to any new country, you should always do your own research. Figure out how much it will cost for you to live there and whether this would be within your budget. You should also consider the quality of life and whether it will suit your preferred lifestyle. Finally, remember to treat everyone with kindness and compassion. You are now living in a different country with different cultures and values, so be sure to always remain respectful.
