Credit One Charleston Open to Honor South Carolina Native Althea Gibson
In honor of the late Althea Gibson, Credit One Charleston Open on Saturday will rededicate its Althea Gibson Club Court to the former South Carolina native tennis champion.
Born in Clarendon County, SC, Althea Gibson was the first African American tennis player to win a Grand Slam and was the first African American player to compete in Wimbledon. In total, she won 11 Grand Slam titles and was a consistently ranked top 10 player.
The rededication presented by Rep. Wendell Gilliard and Charleston Tennis President, Bob Moran, will pay tribute to Althea Gibson’s family with the new SC State House Resolution declaring the tennis court in her name and celebrating the most recent milestones and recognitions that have been bestowed upon her. The court rededication will happen after Saturday’s second match (roughly 12 pm).
