Summerville will Soon Have its First Cat Cafe

Published

on

Mews + Brews, Summerville’s first cat cafe, is planning to open in late 2022. Owner and founder Cait Cox says her fledgling business will partner with Dorchester Paws, who will provide the cats and kittens for the cafe’s “cat lounge.” Visitors will be able to adopt any of the rescue cats they see at the cafe.

Cat cafes first appeared in Taiwan, and their popularity quickly spread around the world. There are a growing number of cat cafes in the United States, including one in downtown Charleston.

“You get to visit and spend time with your favorite cats, without having to scoop a single litter box,” Cox said. “It’s a pretty sweet set-up if you ask me! We’ll be working with Dorchester Paws to adopt out the cats that live in our cafe. At the end of the day, we want them all to find their forever homes, and this is a great way to make that happen.”

Mews + Brews will also sell pre-packaged food items from local vendors, as well as tea, coffee, beer, and wine. They will have a separate area for lounging with the cats, away from the food and drink service bar. The cafe will charge $15 per hour to visit, with a non-alcoholic beverage included in the entry fee.

The cafe will be launching a Kickstarter in May to raise funding for their location and its necessary renovations.
