Press Release

Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department (CCEM) is celebrating Earth Day by hosting a free shred event and backyard compost bin giveaway. The shred event will take place from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday, April 16th, at the Public Services Building, located at 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston.

CCEM will accept confidential documents for free on-site shredding and recycling from residents of Charleston County; no commercial business material will be accepted. This is a shred event only; no other items will be accepted. The event will be held rain or shine.

CCEM also will provide FREE backyard composting bins to Charleston County residents. These bins will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. ORBIS’ Earth Machine® Compost Bin is a durable, 80-gallon backyard compost bin designed to compost food and yard waste, effectively diverting it from landfills.

Compost bin info:

  • 80-gallon, 300-liter capacity.
  • Easy snap together assembly.
  • Twist locking lid.
  • Harvest door, for easy compost removal.
  • Vertical and horizontal ventilation.
  • User guide, harvest door, lid and screws included.
  • BPA free.
  • UV stabilizer is added to resist deterioration from sunlight.
  • Made from recycled content.

According to SCDHEC’s Don’t Waste Food SC Campaign, food is the number one item Americans throw away. Each year, up to 40% of the food supply in the US is never consumed – an annual loss of $218 billion. Wasted food also wastes labor, energy, water, land, and other resources used to produce, package, and transport food from a farm to our plates, while more than 41 million Americans are food insecure. Backyard compost bins allow residents to repurpose food waste while simultaneously conserving valuable landfill space.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events are now coordinated in more than 193 countries.
