Former Bachelor Contestant & Bachelorette Prefers Being the Show’s Emcee

By: Jeff Walker, Entertainment Writer

ABC Television’s ‘The Bachelor’ and it’s equally long running off-shoot ‘The Bachelorette’ have garnered millions of fans over the years. ‘Bachelor’ first debuted back in 2002 and recently completed in its 26th season, with ‘Bachelorette’ filming its 19th season later this year after first airing in 2003.

With several spin-offs, including ‘Bachelor in Paradise’, ‘Bachelor Pad’, and ‘After the Rose’, the franchise has created several well-loved TV personalities. Among one former contestant who has endeared themselves to religious viewers is Becca Kufrin. She is currently acting as host in the first ever ‘Bachelor Live on Stage‘ touring this spring across America.

Kufrin admits she’s enjoying the ride. “It’s a whole different experience. When I was a contestant, it was more about me trying to find love and being a part of the show. What I’m doing now is more of a job, and my job is to make the travelling show run smoothly.” Kufrin admits she is having fun. I absolutely love it.”

Having competed on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, Kufrin says the road show has become a new love for her. “I actually prefer hosting. Each show has a different dynamic to them, and I find that thrilling. I love feeding off the people on stage and the live audience. I thrive off all of it. It’s just a whole lot of fun.”

Kufrin recalls when the show was first presented to her. “They called me back in 2019 and said they are putting together a live show to take on the road and asked if I would be interested in being part of it, acting as a host. I didn’t have to think long. I love the whole Bachelor and Bachelorette franchise, and after they laid out how the show would be I knew it was something I wanted to be part of.”

The show originally made its debut back in early 2020 with Ben Higgins as part of the cast. Higgins competed on ‘Bachelorette’ in 2015 becoming ‘The Bachelor’ in 2016. “We did about 20 shows before COVID brought it to a halt. What hurt about that is we were just beginning to find our footing.” Kufrin says two years later the show has a different look. “Back in 2020 we had two hosts. It was Ben and me, and we had four dancers. Now it’s two dancers and me as the lone host.”

There is one really big change this time around. “In 2020 We had local bachelors competing, now we have one travelling with the show. It’s less about making local connections and more about having a light-hearted evening and allowing the ladies competing and audience members to experience The Bachelor live. But who knows, sometimes sparks happen. For me it’s all about having fun.”

While Higgins did participate in the 2020 production, he’s not part of the 2022 show, which now has a revolving door of former Bachelor contestants. The Charleston show will feature Rodney Matthews who survived seven weeks on The Bachelorette 2018, which allows for some chemistry between Kufrin and Matthews.

“Rodney and I obviously know each other so that makes for instant rapport. However, most of the guys I’ve never met at least not in person. I’ve had some on my podcasts.” Kufrin admits competing on the televised shows have a residual effect on the contestants. “I was never in a sorority, but the TV show bonds us, because it has a small core of people who’ve taken part.”

There’s been buzz since the show has returned to the road that there may be a few surprises. “We do have guest appearances from time to time. Not throughout but on occasion. It depends mainly where we’re playing. I don’t have any advance knowledge about Charleston and wouldn’t share if I did, because we’d want it to be a surprise.”

While the pandemic may have kept The Bachelor Live on Stage from touring, Kufrin says she kept busy with her podcast and one joint venture she particularly proud of, winemaking. “It’s called Bourdon which is French for bumblebee. We have a sparkling rose and grand cuvee.” The whole idea was conceived when she and fellow Bachelor alum Caroline Lunny visited a California wine tasting event. Kufrin’s online description says it best, ‘no moment is too small to not have a bottle of crisp, cold bubbly in the fridge.’

Happily, back on the road with Bachelor Live on Stage, this will be Kufrin’s first trip to the Holy City. “I’ve heard so much about Charleston. I’m very excited and looking forward to seeing as much as I can in the short amount of time I’m there. We usually roll in mid-morning and acclimate ourselves to the theater we’re playing in before venturing out.”

She goes on to say, “By the afternoon we try to get out and see a little bit of the town. I know Charleston has a lot to offer so it might be hard to soak it all in with just a few hours, but I’ll do my best. One of the best perks about travelling with the show is getting to see as many of the cities and towns we stop in, and hopefully in this case it will urge me to get back sooner and spend more time in Charleston.”

Fans of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette can take part in Becca’s fun as she and the cast bring the live show to the North Charleston Performing Arts Center on Friday April 8th.
