Inclusive Surfing on Folly Beach: Charleston County Parks’ Wheel to Surf Event Returns in May
On Saturday, May 7th, Charleston County Parks will partner with other organizations to provide individuals with physical disabilities an opportunity to experience surfing at Folly Beach County Park.
Surfing staff from partner organizations Ocean Cure, Adaptive Surf Project, Coastal Adaptive Sports, and Adaptive Expeditions will provide instruction and assistance in a controlled environment.
This unique event, called Wheel to Surf, will be offered during a morning session from 9 am to 12 pm, as well as an afternoon session from 12 pm to 3 pm. Pre-registration is required by 2 pm on May 6th, and registration is available at CharlestonCountyParks.com. The event is free of charge. Each participant will be fitted for a personal flotation device or life jacket on site, and will enjoy a 20-minute guided surfing session on the water. All surfing equipment will be provided.
Participants must also meet and adhere to specific guidelines for safety purposes. For a list of guidelines, visit CharlestonCountyParks.com.
“We are thrilled to bring back Wheel to Surf at Folly Beach County Park for the first time since 2019,” said Ashley Hoover, a leader of inclusive recreation for Charleston County Parks. “We are grateful for our continued partnership with these amazing local and regional organizations, a partnership that sustained despite two years of having to cancel this event due to the pandemic. With their expertise and passion, we are again able to offer a unique adaptive surfing experience to community members with disabilities. As Charleston County Parks continues to expand access and inclusion across our parks, programs, and services, this is just one example of how we are working to provide accessible experiences to all within our community.”
