Sailors Set to Begin 7th Leg of 2022 Worrell 1000 Race on Folly Beach Monday

On Monday, May 16th, residents and visitors alike can gather in front of the Tides Hotel on Folly Beach to watch as racers begin the 7th leg of the 2022 Worrell 1000. This 1,000-mile catamaran race features 13 two-person crews from 6 different countries. The event is slated to start at 10 am.
Born from a bar bet between Michael Worrell and his brother Chris in 1974, the race is soon approaching its 50th anniversary. From the original Hobie 16 catamarans sailed over a consistent 24-hour period in 1974 to the F18 catamarans used in today’s spectator-friendly checkpoint-to-checkpoint race, this grueling event has stood the test of time. After the race has concluded in Virginia Beach, a formal awards banquet will be held with a program honoring a Worrell competitor and prior champion, Ron Anthony, who was lost in a tragic plane crash in 1983.
New this year, the winning team will be honored with a Champion’s Perpetual Trophy. Also, one chosen competitor will receive a sportsmanship award, named after fallen sailor and Worrell alumni Sandra Tartaglino.
You can follow along on the official Worrell race live tracker at Kattack.com. For more information regarding the event, visit Worrell1000Race.com, and follow the Worrell 1000 on Facebook, where live feeds will be broadcast daily during the event.
