Press Release from Charleston County

Last week, Governor Henry McMaster signed a new law to allow early voting in South Carolina. Any registered voter can vote early ahead of the June 14th Primaries.

“This change in law gives every eligible voter the opportunity to vote prior to Election Day,” said Board of Elections Director Isaac Cramer.

Early voting will be available from Tuesday, May 31st to Friday, June 10th at the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration Office located at 4367 Headquarters Road, North Charleston, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

In-person absentee voting has been replaced with early voting. Absentee voting by mail is available for qualified voters prior to Election Day. Qualified voters include:

  • Voters with disabilities.
  • Voters sixty-five years of age or older.
  • Members of the Armed Forces and Merchant Marines of the United States, their spouses, and dependents residing with them.
  • Voters admitted to hospitals as emergency patients on the day of an election or within a four-day period before the election.
  • Voters who, for one of the following reasons, are unable to vote in person on any day of the early-voting period or on Election Day
    • Employment obligations
    • Attending sick or physically disabled persons
    • Confined to a jail or pretrial facility pending disposition of arrest or trial
    • Absent from their county for any reason.

Mail-in Absentee ballot applications can be requested by phone, email or at the Board of Elections office. If a voter applies beginning May 31st, the Charleston County Board of Elections will issue new applications. Current absentee ballot applications are available but will only be accepted through May 31st. After May 31st, residents will be required to submit the new application. The deadline to return the new one is June 3rd. Ballots must be returned by mail or in person to the Board of Elections no later than 7 pm on June 14th, 2022.
