Brookgreen Gardens Vice President of Collections and Curator of Sculpture Awarded Medal of Honor by the National Sculpture Society
Brookgreen Gardens’ Vice President of Collections and Curator of Sculpture, Robin Salmon (right), has received the Medal of Honor from the National Sculpture Society (NSS), the oldest organization of professional sculptors in the country. On June 3, Salmon was awarded the prestigious accolade for her outstanding service to the field of American sculpture through her work as a professional curator, historian, archivist, writer, and editor.
As Vice President of Collections and Curator of Sculpture, Salmon oversees the largest and most significant collection of American figurative sculpture in the world and is responsible for the acquisition, documentation, exhibition, and conservation of art, history, library, and archives collections at Brookgreen. She also supervises the programs at Brookgreen’s Center for American Sculpture, including workshops and residencies that draw renowned artists and sculptors from around the world. In addition to her role at Brookgreen, Salmon has supported the NSS and continued its longstanding relationship with Brookgreen through the integral roles of board member, executive committee member, and exhibitions advisor over the past few decades, at times serving in all those capacities at once. She also edited the Society’s annual awards exhibition catalogue for several years.
“It was an honor to witness the National Sculpture Society present Robin the Medal of Honor for her lifetime of service to the field,” says Page Kiniry, President and CEO of Brookgreen. “Brookgreen has always had a close relationship with the NSS since the Huntingtons, Brookgreen’s founders, were members and supporters of the organization. Robin’s outstanding service has continued this relationship and the Huntingtons’ legacy.”
Salmon’s other accomplishments include authoring five books on Brookgreen Gardens, co-authoring eight books on other art and history subjects, and publishing numerous essays and articles for exhibit catalogues, magazines, and other publications. She is the co-editor of Sculpture Review magazine, serves on the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee of the U.S. Mint, is a member of the National Advisory Council of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in Florida, and is president of the board of directors of the Georgetown County Historical Society and Museum. She was previously recognized by the NSS with its Sculpture House Award in 2007.
