Animal Wellness Action Releases Statement on Sentencing of South Carolina Cockfighter on Drug Trafficking Charges

Marty Irby, the executive director at Animal Wellness Action, released the following statement regarding the conviction of Jeffrey Justice Dale Williams on conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute 34 kilograms of meth. At the time of arrest, law enforcement also discovered hundreds of brutalized animals and evidence of cock-fighting at his property:

“We applaud the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, Assistant U.S. Attorney Molly K. Smith, and Judge Drew Tipton for bringing justice in this case, and hope to see more action brought by DOJ against cockfighters in the Palmetto State.

Just this week we’ve seen confirmation of New Castle disease in gamecock flocks on a global scale and Avian Influenza in at least 35 states in the U.S. this year. Congress can do more to help stamp out this cruelty by passing the Animal Cruelty Enforcement Act cosponsored by Rep. Nancy Mace. The spread of these diseases has wreaked havoc on commercial poultry flocks in the South Carolina in recent years and creates tremendous health risks.”
