Joe Cunningham Releases Statement on Judiciary Subcommittee Passing Total Abortion Bill

Published

on

Democratic nominee for Governor Joe Cunningham today released the following statement regarding the SC House Judiciary subcommittee’s vote to advance an abortion ban:

“Today, Governor McMaster’s allies on the House Judiciary Subcommittee voted for a total ban on abortion in our state – a ban that the governor has been promoting for months. In doing so, Republican politicians have put the health and safety of women in South Carolina at risk. They have put our economic growth at risk. And they have fully rejected the notion of small government and personal liberty.

Governor McMaster and his friends in the legislature are radical, extreme and out of touch with the majority of South Carolinians.

Forcing women and girls to have their body seized by the state to give birth, suffer physical harm or become gravely ill against their will is not morality, it is not small government  – it is state-sanctioned torture.

To be very clear: the majority of South Carolinians do not support this blatant attack on their freedoms. The majority of South Carolinians agree that we deserve a basic right to privacy. Henry McMaster and his colleagues in the legislature know this and that’s why they’re hellbent on fast-tracking this legislation into law before voters can voice their opposition at the ballot box. As Governor, I will do everything in my power to stop this outrageous government overreach and I promise to veto this bill – and any bill – that strips basic human rights from half of our population.”
