Magnetic South is an innovative partnership between the Charleston Symphony and the College of Charleston Department of Music. It combines resources of the two institutions to present masterworks of the 20th and 21st centuries, along with new works by living composers.

For the fall Magnetic South performance, artistic director Yiorgos Vassilandonakis shares, “Magnetic South celebrates American composers of diverse background and origin, exploring their stylistic and aesthetic influences and sources of inspiration that comprise the rich tapestry of living contemporary American music: a Tango-infused large ensemble work by Pablo Ortiz, deep Gullah references in Trevor Weston’s septet, an energetic clarinet and string trio by Hannah Kendall, and the Darius Milhaud 1920 masterpiece: Le Boeuf sur le Toit, a score inspired by Brazilian folk music, originally  conceived as “background music to any Charlie Chaplin silent film” but ultimately premiering as a Jean Cocteau ballet.”

The concert is co-conducted by Vassilandonakis, and the new Music Director of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra, Nisan Ak

PROGRAM: Le boeuf sur le toit, Op. 58 by Darius Milhaud, Vera by Hannah Kendall, Mores Redux by Pablo Ortiz and Messages by Trevor Weston.
