Free Community Class Series at Romney Urban Garden

Join The Charleston Horticultural Society for a series of “Dig & Discover” community classes at the Romney Urban Garden (RUG) in downtown Charleston.

RUG is a small urban garden located at the end of Romney Court in the Upper Neck of the peninsula. In 2014, with seed money provided by the Historic Charleston Foundation (HCF), the youth of New Israel Reformed Episcopal Church (NIREC) set out to rehabilitate a vacant lot owned by the church. Neighbors, church members, and HCF spent hours clearing the lot and initially added nine raised beds, constructed a mosaic, and installed a pizza oven.

In late 2020, CHS Hort joined HCF and NIREC to ensure the future of this important community asset. CHS Hort spearheads efforts for volunteer days for garden maintenance; designed, financed, and installed a pollinator garden with the help of Remark Design in August 2021 and implements educational programs.

Dig & Discover classes are scheduled during our volunteer workdays and participants are encouraged to come out and pitch in at the garden before or after each class.

Dig & Discover Fall Class Schedule:

September 17th at 9 am: RUG Workday, 10am-10:30am: Composting: Why We Should Do It & How To Get Started with Tony Bertauski of TTC Horticulture Department
October 15th at 9 am: Growing Citrus in Charleston with Nancy Hart, followed by installation of a cold hardy citrus garden at RUG, generously funded by Historic Charleston Foundation. Participants will help install the garden while hands on learning proper planting techniques and tricks for successful planting
November 12th at 9 am: RUG Workday, 10am-10:30am: Getting Started with Pollinator Gardening with Lauren Boyd of Remark Design

All “Dig & Discover” classes are free of charge and open to the public. RUG is located at 222 Romney Court, Charleston. Street parking is available on Romney Court & surrounding streets.
