Ralph H. Johnson VA Hosts Stand Down for Homelessness Event
The Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System is hosting a Stand Down Against Homelessness event from 8 am until 2 pm on September 16th, 2022, at the VA Community Resource & Referral Center located at 2424 City Hall Lane in North Charleston. The free event includes legal counseling, clothing vouchers, flu shots, health screenings, hygiene items, and HIV testing.
The goal of the event is to reach individuals in crisis and connect them with programs and services that will end their homelessness. Stand Down is intended to serve homeless Veterans but is open to all individuals and families impacted by homelessness. According to the most recent statistics released by the South Carolina Interagency Council on Homelessness, there are currently 433 homeless Veterans in the Lowcountry, with 323 living in Charleston County, amounting to 75 percent of the homeless population in Charleston County alone.
Each year area non-profits and community volunteers come out to support the event and ensure its success in connecting Veterans with the services they need. Local universities provide volunteers and other resources on-site during the event. In addition to the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System, the following community partners are essential to providing all the resources available to Veterans at Stand Down: Tri- County Veteran Support Network; SC Vocational Rehabilitation; SC Legal Services; SC Department of Employment; Veteran Justice Outreach, Project Street Outreach; One80Place; Compensated Work Therapy (CWT); WestRock; Knight Companies; Job Impulse; MUSC; Explore Charleston; Knights Companies; Compass Group; Transworld; Vet Friends; Gildan; Soldier’s Angel; Military Community Connections; Whole Health; Palmetto Warrior Connection; I AM M.O.E. and The Hope Center.
