Press Release

Macabre mayhem and mischief arrive just in time for Halloween! From the creators of Jersey Boys, comes one of the most produced ever Broadway musicals in America. It’s the Addams Family musical with its kooky, crazy, spooky, weird and funny cast of characters: Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch, and Uncle Fester. Their greatest nightmare comes true when daughter Wednesday, all grown up now, falls in love with Lucas, a “normal” boy! When Lucas and Wednesday’s families meet for dinner, the fractured fun begins.

“They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky!” The Addams were born in New Yorker cartoons first drawn by six-decade career cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938, and met their widest acclaim in the 1960s tv show. Now, we see the family in a whole new light with an original plot, spectacular musical numbers, and a dancing ensemble of Addams family “ancestors” who wreak havoc everywhere. Gomez experiences every father’s nightmare flipped on its head: Wednesday falls for an Ohian boy from a normal, respectable family, and she starts to take a liking to sunshine and bright colors! With Gomez trapped between telling Morticia the truth and keeping Wednesday’s secret while trying to entertain a “different” kind of family for dinner, chaos and comedy ensue.

The Addams Family – A New Musical is about an unusual family trying to act ‘normal’ for just one night in order to impress their daughter’s possible fiancé…but just which family is the ‘normal’ one?” asks Director and Charleston Stage’s Artistic Director Designee, Marybeth Clark. “Most of us are familiar with the conflicts that can happen in a family: siblings bicker, parents disagree and who doesn’t have that ‘unique’ uncle, cousin or aunt who are the star of many family stories? Sure your dad may not collect torture devices and your mom may not long for a vacation in the sewers of Paris, but I know we can all find something familiar in this hilarious story about a family simply trying to make their relationships work.”

Scenic Designer Adam Jehle speaks of his new designs for this show: “My hope is for audiences to leave having seen a fresh take on this American classic. Our ‘design mantra’ for the show has been the phrase ‘Everything is not as it seems.’ Be sure to take a good look at the set in each scene, because that very well may be true.”

The cast features Resident Actors Cedar Valdez as Gomez Addams (The Play That Goes Wrong “Trevor” and Kinky Boots “Harry”), Eliza Knode as Morticia Addams, Jenna Barricklo as Wednesday Addams, and Raymond Cronley as Lucas Beineke (The Play That Goes Wrong “Jonathan/Charles Haversham”). Charleston Stage Performance Troupe members Harry Baxley and Ripley Swisher will share and rotate the role of Pugsley throughout the run. Other talents include Acting Ensemble Members Colin Waters as Uncle Fester (The Play That Goes Wrong “Robert/Thomas Colleymore” and Elf the Musical “Santa Claus”) and Ryan Pixler as Mal Beineke (Noises Off “Garry/Roger” and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast “Lumiere”), with local guest actors Anna Baker as Alice Beineke, Kathy Summer as Grandma (Elf the Musical “Deb”), and former Charleston Stage Resident Actor Patrick Brett as Lurch (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast “The Beast”). Thirteen additional actors from the Charleston Stage Acting Ensemble, Resident Acting Company and local acting community round out the cast in the Ensemble.
Charleston Stage’s The Play That Goes Wrong features the Direction of Artistic Director Designee Marybeth Clark, Music Direction by Resident Music Director and Director of Music Education Sam Henderson, Choreography by Guest Choreographer Cara Dolan, Set Designs by Technical Director and Scenic & Projector Designer Adam Jehle, Costume Designs by Associate Costume Designer and Construction Coordinator Hayley O’Brien, Property Designs by Properties Supervisor Aline Toloto, Lighting Design by Resident Lighting Designer Caleb S. Garner, Sound Design by Resident Sound Designer Luke Walchuk, and Stage Management by Production Manager Ashley Palmer.
