Inaugural AfroSouth Film Festival Coming to Charleston in November

The first AfroSouth Film Festival is set to premier from November 4th to 6th, 2022 in Charleston. This new event aims to “showcase the contributions and inclusions of the African Diaspora on southern culture through the art of filmmaking.” The festival includes film screenings, interactive panels, workshops, youth programs, and networking opportunities.

Here’s a look at the programming schedule:

• Friday, November 4th
  • Opening Night Celebration
    • 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm in Marion Square (at the corner of Calhoun and King Streets)
    • Movie in the Park – a celebration of two South Carolina greats, James Brown and Chadwick Boseman. Featuring a screening of Get On Up! – The James Brown Story starring Boseman
    • This movie is free and open to the public
• Saturday, November 5th
  • Education and Arts Day
    • College of Charleston’s Harbor Walk Theater 1 and Theater 2 (360 Concord St).
    • Film screenings of some of the south’s most talented filmmakers along with sessions with industry professionals
    • Film Screenings from 9:30 am – 4 pm
    • Panels  & Master Classes from 11 am – 11:45 am
      • Sanford Green
        • Learn with Marvel Comics illustrator/animator Sanford Greene, his body of work includes Spiderman, Black Panther and his own creation Bitter Root series from
      • Actors Master Class – Making It to The Big Screen
        • Discuss tips and industry secrets with some of South Carolina’s most talented Hollywood actors featuring Chaz Shepherd (The Game, The Marvin Sapp Story), and Jeryl Prescott (The Walking Dead, Resort to Love and All the Queens Men) and Max Hernandez(The Avengers, Stargirl, Rise)
      • Dana Campbell
        • The Style & Wardrobe of the Film Industry – Don’t miss a look into the world of movie fashion and wardrobe design from Hollywood veteran costume designer Dana Campbell
      • My Nephew Emmett Screening and Panel Discussion
        • Screening of the Oscar Nominated Short film “My Nephew Emmitt” (The Emmitt Till Story) with discussion from Writer/Director Kevin Wilson and Producer Austin James along with historical panelists Rev. Nelson Rivers
        • Followed by Closing awards presentation
• Sunday, November 6th
  • Filmmakers Meet-up Breakfast
    • 8:30 am – 10:30 am at the Cambria Hotel Riverview (84 Ripley Pt. Drive)

The AfroSouth film festival is a 501(c)(3) organization and showcases the contributions and inclusions of the African Diaspora on southern culture through the art of filmmaking. Through a cultural homecoming celebration and industry education, this film festival will help promote, protect, and honor the historically silenced and often disenfranchised contributors within the filmmaking industry.
