Coastal Community Foundation’s New Giving Circle Aims to be Catalyst for Growth in African American Communities

The Lowcountry African American Giving Circle launches today at Coastal Community Foundation (CCF). A Giving Circle is a form of philanthropy where individuals pool their donations and decide together which organizations and projects to support. The Lowcountry African American Giving Circle plans to support initiatives that give African American communities a voice and grow their economic, social justice, and educational interests.

“I realized my dollar can make a bigger impact when we come together,” said Lowcountry African American Giving Circle Executive Chair Janister Herring. “We hope to gather 200 founding donors to create a $1 million endowment that will support Lowcountry African American communities for generations to come.”

The Giving Circle was seeded with a $50,000 matching grant from Facebook. That amount has already been matched by the Giving Circle’s founding donors.

“In addition to funding organizations which support local African American communities, the Giving Circle will be composed of leaders who reflect those communities,” said Coastal Community Foundation President and CEO Darrin Goss. “The Giving Circle will introduce new nonprofits to CCF and through this partnership we can connect them to more funding opportunities.”
