Annex Dance Company Announces Performance at the Sottile Theatre
Annex Dance Company announces a two-city tour in February to the Etherredge Center in Aiken, SC February 4, 2023 and the Sottile Theatre in Charleston February 11th, 2023. The concert is inspired by the work of Aiken-based visual artist Leslie Alexander, and will include repertory created in collaboration with Laura Ball, Janine McCabe, and John Jannone. Ticket prices for the 7 PM performance on February 11th at the Sottile Theatre are $25 students/seniors, $40 Adult, and $50 for a ticket that includes a post-performance champagne toast with the company. Tickets can be purchased at https://gsbo.cofc.edu/ starting January 4th. Information about the Aiken performance can be found at http://annexdancecompany.org/
Collaboration is one of the cornerstones of the Annex Dance Company mission, and over the years artistic director Kristin Alexander has worked with a number of visual artists, including her mother-in-law, Leslie Alexander. The mother-in-law, daughter-in-law collaborators have always shared a deep respect for each other’s artistic process, and quickly found value in how their personal art form could enhance the other. “Leslie’s paintings have a textural quality, similar to the movement quality seen in Annex Dance Company choreography,” shares Alexander. Leslie Alexander continues, “As a visual artist with a passion for color, my collaborations with Annex Dance Company expands the artistic experience and brings a spirit of enhanced wonder as they make my two-dimensional art come alive through movement.” Throughout this concert, the connection between the two art forms inform one another and share the stage in different ways through the use of costuming, multimedia projections, and long scenic panels.
The February concerts will include three pieces of the company repertory: Glimpses & Layers (2015), Behind, Beyond, Between (2021), and Hover (2022), which premiered during the 2022 Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Hover has an original commissioned musical score by Laura Ball and costume design by Janine McCabe, both Charleston-based artists. In addition, the concerts will premiere a new work that was started while in-residence at Camp Ballibay for the Fine and Performing Arts entitled Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. NY-based sound and multimedia artist John Jannone created arrangements of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for the piece. This work will also feature student dancers who will audition and rehearse with the company members in the New Year leading up to the performances. “It’s exciting to have the company in a place to present this large-scale concert in theaters like the Sottile and the Etherredge Center,” shares associate artistic director Julie Clark. “In keeping with our mission of education, we’re thrilled to include student dancers in both shows. Each season, we create opportunities to share the stage with pre-professional dancers, and in February they will be dancing in these larger theaters alongside the company. It’s a wonderful peek behind the scenes for young dancers in our community that hope to pursue a career in dance.”
