Magnetic South to Present Free Concert of Modern Symphonic Music

Magnetic South is an innovative partnership between the Charleston Symphony and the College of Charleston Department of Music. It combines resources of the two institutions to present masterworks of the 20th and 21st centuries, along with new works by living composers.

For its second concert of the season, Magnetic South moves up the street from campus to the wonderful acoustics of the Cathedral of Saint Luke and Saint Paul, where artistic director Yiorgos Vassilandonakis and Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra music director Nisan Ak share the podium to lead Charleston Symphony musicians. The performance celebrates new works by Kay Rhie, Alexandre Mastrangelo and Thea Musgrave — three living composers of diverse backgrounds, and wide-ranging stylistic and aesthetic influences that comprise the rich tapestry of living contemporary music — along with Igor Stravinsky’s 1923 “Octet for Wind Instruments,” one of the composer’s most noted works of his neoclassical period.

PROGRAM:

Alexandre Mastrangelo (b. 1989) Mise en abîme (new work)

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) Octet

Thea Musgrave (b. 1928) Chamber Concerto No. 1 (for large ensemble)

Kay Rhie (b. 1971) Cereus: Night Bloom (new work)

DETAILS: The concert on Friday, January 27, 2023 takes place at 7:30 pm in the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming St. Admission is FREE via online reservations at charlestonsymphony.org/event/magneticsouth23. Patrons can find info and ticket link at the short link: go.cofc.edu/mas.
