Redux Contemporary Art Center will next month present “Interwoven,” a solo exhibition from Columbia based artist Jordan Sheridan. The artist works in textile installation and oil painting, and Redux says this exhibition “will transform the galleries with a new series of paintings along with a large, crocheted, and light-based installation titled, The Mother.”  The exhibition will run from March 31st to May 20th.

Here’s what else Redux had to say about the exhibition:

“Interwoven is the result of Sheridan imagining the maternal experience as an enveloping, polymorphous mass that is ever stretching, fracturing, and shifting. The work documents and aestheticizes her personal experience as a mother to her young children. Through painting and installation, she communicates the paradox of feeling both overwhelmed and spellbound as a mother, of reconnecting the fragmented pieces of her identity while the boundaries between herself and her children are often blurred. In addition to the six-week exhibition, the artist will host a free community workshop on Saturday, April 1:00-4:00PM. More information will be available in the coming weeks at www.reduxstudios.org/learn.”

Sheridan was born in Northeastern Arkansas in 1989. She became a mother to her son, Samuel, in 2017 while attending graduate school at the University of South Carolina. Pursuing an MFA degree, Sheridan’s work organically shifted to include her understanding of motherhood. This change in research pushed her from working primarily in 2-D painting to 3-D artmaking via large-scale textile installations. Sheridan is currently a full-time faculty instructor at the University of South Carolina, teaching painting courses. She resides in Columbia with her partner and young children. In 2022, she was the winner of the 701 CCA Prize Competition for the 701 Center of Contemporary Art.

EXHIBITION HOURS: Tuesday – Friday 11am – 5pm, Saturday noon – 3pm, and by appointment.
