Light The World Mobile Giving Machine Announces Crowd Sourced Miracles
Leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered Thursday at Charleston Mayor John J. Tecklenburg’s office to announce the funds that were raised to support the Palmetto Project and Homeless to Hope Fund.
“Charleston is wonderfully generous,” stated Stake President Reed Smith. “They donated over $45,000 to the The Light the World campaign over 5 days that will purchase more than 1,500 items to support the Palmetto Project and the Homeless to Hope Fund. These items include a 7-day bus pass, winter clothing, a warm night’s rest, personal care kits, family meals and much more. In total, 13,366 items were donated to charities through the Mobile Giving Machine this year between the 5 cities that were part of this inaugural voyage! We are very grateful for the outpouring of love shown to those in need by the Charleston community.”
The Mobile Giving Machine visited five cities in the southeastern United States during this pilot program; Jacksonville, Florida; Birmingham, Alabama; Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Eight local charities from the five cities and one global charity received donations from thousands of visitors in every city. The Light The World Giving Machine is sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which enables 100% of every donation to go to the charities selected.
“We’d like first to thank Mayor Tecklenberg for letting us bring these machines to Charleston,” said Dr. David Goltra, Director of Communications for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Charleston before the ceremonial check presentation on March 10th. “We were honored to be a host city and experience the hope that this brought into our community. Every donor who visited the Mobile Giving Machine has had a significant impact on changing people’s lives.”
The 2023 Mobile Giving Machine raised $412,410 across all five cities. Since 2017, the Giving Machine program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has empowered more than $15.1 million dollars in charitable donations. Total giving numbers for 2023 across all 28 Giving Machine locations around the world have not yet been released. Visit www.mobilegivingmachine.org to learn more.
